Wrong, according to at least one definition of the relevant terms: ‘Sex’ is the constellation biological characteristics, whereas ‘gender’ is the constellation of cultural and psychological characteristics. Transsexuals have a gender at variance with their sex, cissexuals do not, and hermaphrodites are born with an ambiguous sex, which is usually surgically modified into one state or the other shortly after birth to prevent confusion about their gender.

Except now the word is *intersex *instead of hermaphrodite. But otherwise it was a superb explanation!

Right. I noticed that after I posted. Mainly, I’m impressed with myself for knowing the term ‘cissexual’ even though Firefox’s spellcheck doesn’t.
Microsoft and Firefox are about 15 years behind the times on gender terminology. I doubt they exhibit the same lacunae in the field of popular electronics.
Actually, it’s kind of odd what the Firefox spellchecker knows. ‘Firefox’, for example, didn’t make the cut. Neither did ‘FreeBSD’, ‘FireWire’, or ‘iPod’, for that matter. ‘Radionuclide’, ‘hadron’, ‘corpus’, ‘dopamine’, and ‘vesicle’, however, are in like Flynn.
There’s a bias, obviously, but it isn’t a slam-dunk that the dictionary was written by computer geeks. For one thing, it doesn’t know ‘geeks’.
