Enjoying music

I really enjoy music when I am out even if I am at someone else’s home but for some reason I can’t enjoy music in my own home by myself. I turn it on all the time but it always ends up being turned way down or off shortly after. I really miss the music but nothing I listen to seems to grab me. I stumbled across something a few weeks ago that stuck with me. I was at my sister’s house sitting out on the patio and the neighbor’s had some kind of soundtrack going maybe a channel. It was just a hodge podge of different types of music all good. Jazz, rock and roll, love songs, classical, even opera. I can’t remember having enjoyed music as much as I did that day. Now I am wondering if I can buy hodge podges like that somewhere I can play at home.

How do you play your music? What do you want to buy, MP3 files?

I am willing to upgrade, right now just using my music channels on TV or the FM radio

I think you should try listening to concept albums.

My personal favorite is Roger Waters “Amused to Death”

Turn the lights down, light some candles and turn off your phone.

Set the mood.

There’s a lot to be said for “gift” music, such as what your neighbor was playing: music that falls into your life without your seeking it out, a gift from the universe. It can be magical in a way that self-selecting sometimes isn’t.

Anyone else reminded of Tom Wait’s intro to Better Off Without A Wife?

Just a sample here, possibly NSFW:

Well usually about 2.30 in the morning you’ve ended up taking advantage of yourself.
There ain’t no way around that you know. Yeah, making a scene with a magazine, there ain’t no way around.
I’ll confess you know, I’m no different you know. I’m not weird about it or anything, I don’t tie myself up first.
I just kinda spend a little time with myself
So this is kind of a little anthem here.

You could easily enough make a playlist of random stuff. You’ll probably have a harder time finding a service to just do it unguided since those sites/services are guided by the principle of “If you like A, you’ll like B due to their connection”. That’s not conducive to jumping from pop to opera to country to soft rock.

Go list as many genres as you want and look up Top 20 Songs lists for each. Feed them into something like Youtube to create a playlist then randomize it. Stuff you wind up hating you can always pull.

Glad you posted this. I really like his music. What Genre does he fall into?

I checked it out and enjoyed it.

Old Tom is difficult to put into a genre. Alternatively alternative maybe?

I often think that Spotify should allow for a “master” shuffle mode, which would include every tune they offer.

mmm

Way, way too much shit music, including a flood of AI generated crap, for that to be useful. That is unless you like hitting skip a couple dozens times till you hear something you like. I say this as someone who likes a lot of genres of music.

Every now and then I will run across a song I may have heard 100 times but suddenly I hear it in a different way and it will become a favorite. This is one of the surprises I enjoy about not selecting for myself.
