I want to object to the upcoming threads that will be posted during the next presidential election (in 2004). I’m gonna get mad when folks start dicussing politics in Great Debates. When will the madness stop? Enough already!
Wait, wait — back up!
Avalonian, are you shitting us? (Feel free to start the 100,000,000th LotR thread in Cafe Society rather than hijack here . . .)
Yes! We need more Buffy threads!
TigoleBitties, thank you for the best laugh I’ve had in weeks. That was comedy platinium.
OK.
Can we have a list of acceptable topics for CS? I mean maud forbid that people discuss and enjoy topics of no interest to Indygrrl. I’m here to entertain her in every forum on the SDMB.
Arnold, we don’t need more Buffy threads. They bore me and I’ve never seen Buffy so you all should shut up about it.
I’m not shitting you, but it’s such a thin and unconfirmed rumour that I’m almost ashamed to repeat it. It’s not worth starting a thread about… yet.
I’m even more ashamed at how excited I was to hear it when my friend told me.
My breath smells like Hobbit…
Er…
I meant, as if I ate the hobbit, rather than…
Never mind…
Arnold, I’ll stop contributing to LOTR movie threads, if the bright-eyed Buffy kids keep quiet about retrofiting profundity into what is basically yet another Hollywood teen TV show with lots of violence. Deal, Indygrrl?
I have to confess I’m not giving up much. “The Two Towers” was one of the dullest, most amateur big-budget movies I’ve ever seen. Jackson really does think he’s doing a good job, doesn’t he? Use all the coolest features from the latest releases of 3D modeling software, spend thousands creating armor, and 2 cents teaching actors how to sword fight, hire a has-been pop star to sing songs, get some fly-by-night conductor to produce “original” music – what’s next Peter, Shakespeare?
Indygirl? Have you even seen IT? Even people, like me, who aren’t JRR Tolkien fans like the darn thing.
I tried several times to read the books, and even though I’m HUGE sci-fi/fantasy/horror fan of a MULTITUDE of different types of authors (from Stephen King to Isaac Asimov to Piers Anthony), I never COULD get into Tolkien’s brand of writing.
The movie however, IS a darn good one.
Sorry, I digress, I have to agree with another poster, IF you are gonna rant, you at LEAST need to tell us WHY you don’t like something.
“It’s sucks, I’m tired of hearing about it,” IS kindof …what’s the word? darn!! Unfair? No,Lame?? (no, too mean),shoot,Well, it’ll come to me,in the meantime I’m sure YOU all know what I mean.
Ditto for me on being a huge sci-fi/etc fan who couldn’t get into the books. I liked the movie too, but I sure didn’t love it.
But you gotta admit…it is kinda annoying scrolling down and seeing thread after thread after thread with LOTR somewhere in it. Why do we need sooo many threads about one movie?!
I don’t think she was ranting about the movie itself, just about how everyone’s talking about it everywhere, so she doesn’t have to defend her opinions as to why she doesn’t like it (since she didn’t, as far as I can remember, say that anywhere).
It’s not like she’s writing the mods to say ‘I am so sick of all this LOTR talk! I demand that you automatically close all threads about it!’ She’s just annoyed at seeing all the hype everywhere, and IMHO that’s a perfectly reasonable reason to start a pit thread.
PS who’s the has-been pop singer?
Cool. I saw this one that was called J.R.R.Token’s something or other that was about these midgets who got together with Dumbledore and Yosemite Sam and some bikers and a gay blonde guy and were like off to do a jewelry heist in Switzerland or someplace. The best part was when they were in Hawaii and these trees from H.R. Puffnstuff came up and beat the hell out of some monkeys.
I’m eagerly waiting for the final segment to find out whether Aragorn winds up with Arwen, Eowyn, or Legolas.
I certainly hope this is true. The Rankin-Bass Hobbit must die.
Hey Indygrrl, I’m with you. I never quite got the hype. I tried reading a Tolkien book when I was younger, but just couldn’t get into it.
Over Christmas one of my friends made me watch the first one. It was mildly entertaining, I suppose. I had to ask my friend what was going on every ten minutes because apparently if you haven’t read the books you’re supposed to know intuitively that hobbits are good, Sauron is in the ring, and elves are immortal.
Or, you could just pay attention to the movie where all three of the things you listed are laid out in front of you.
Indeed? I must’ve missed that part. Err, those three parts.
:::stands and applauds Tigolebitties:::
Better “Lord of the Rings” than… “Lord of the Dance”.
Count your blessings, I guess.
You know, there’s no point in getting into slagging matches over the virtues or flaws of books, TV shows, or movies because a movie that speaks to one person might leave another cold. However, some viewers of a film lack a modicum of intelligence and information to get the context and thematic complexity and enjoy the film to the fullest degree. The question is telling the difference between a legitimate lack of interest and being too unsophisticated to enjoy a given film. Generally, if someone can give a reasoned argument why the Lord of the Rings, for example does not work for him, I can respect the difference of opinion. However, if a person’s criticism consists solely of “That sux,” I’m going to discount that opinion.
Hey! Don’t discount Glimli too soon!
