Entertainments that are guaranteed to make you cry every time?

The end The Wrath of Khan. Every time, without fail. “Ship…out of danger?”=silent, soulful tears.

I second this one! (and I’m a girl).

Wrath of Khan ending
LotR:RotK ending
Grave of the Fireflies
the episode of MASH where Winchester secretly buys X-mas presents for the Korean orphanage, and countless others
Jurassic Bark in Futurama
ending of Beauty and the Beast
the episode of the anime Inuyasha where Kikyo dies again
the episode of Naruto near the beginning where Zabuza dies
the episode of Rurouni Kenshin where Anji watches his children and house burn to death
the ending of Howl’s Moving Castle

That’s just off the top of my head. I cry pretty easily.

A League of Their Own.
Which is bad, 'cuz there’s no crying in baseball.

Where do I turn in my Man Card?

I always tear up when the Beast saves Belle from the wolves. Gettin’ a lump in my throat just thinking about it.

Just got to thinking - movie/TV-related themes and/or songs that choke me up just hearing them (don’t even have to be watching the movie at the time):

Pan’s Labyrinth lullaby

“John Dunbar Theme”, from Dances With Wolves

“Now We Are Free”, from Gladiator

"Niobe’s Theme, from Rome

“May It Be”, from Fellowship of the Ring

“Calling All Angels”, from Deadwood, season two, episode 10 (“Advances, None Miraculous”)

“Old Friend”, from Deadwood, season one, episode seven (“Bullock Returns to the Camp”)

“This Land”, from The Lion King

“You Can Fly! You Can Fly! You Can Fly!”, from Peter Pan

“Amazing Grace”, from Star Trek II - The Wrath of Khan

“We Have All the Time in the World”, from On Her Majesty’s Secret Service

and about a thousand more.

Band of Brothers, Episode 9, “Why We Fight.”

The scene where Liebgott (?) has to translate to the recently liberated concentration camp internees that they have to be locked back in the camp destroys me every time.

Webster’s later speech yelling at the marching German prisoners (“Say hello to Ford and General fucking Motors”) also gets to me, but in a different way.

The Color Purple (film) starting when Shug reunites with her father and then Celie is finally reunited with her sister Nettie and her children that had been taken from her at birth.

I’m getting teary eyed typing this. :frowning:

Dude, you must be made of stone. I’ve been crying for minutes by that point – the part where Winters interviews the prisoner as translated by Liebgott, the opening of the boxcar, that one prisoner who salutes Perconte… oof.

I’ve seen the episode at least 10 times. I can make it through to locking them back in now. The first couple of times - much before hand.

I saw the movie Dear John in the theater and it made me cry. Really any movie that deals with war always evokes some emotion in me.

Y’all ever try to read Charlotte’s Web to your kids? How the hell anyone can get through the last page is beyond me.

Dylan’s Simple Twist of Fate.

Sarah McLachlan’s “Hold On”

One of the first things to come to my mind.

There’s lots of songs, but Harry Chapin’s “Tangled Up Puppet” always does it.

For movies:

Homeward Bound
Beaches
Saving Private Ryan

And the mother of all tearjerkers- Sophie’s Choice. The first time I saw it, it must have taken me at least ten minutes to compose myself before I could leave the theater. (And I already knew the ending)

Home Alone when the old snow shovel guy reunites with his family and turns to wave at Kevin who has just re-united with his family. SOB!

Star Trek II starting with, “Ship… out of danger?” peaking with, “I have been and always shall be your friend.” and ending with, “His was the most… human.”

Mary Stewart’s Merlin Trilogy - 2nd book. Arthur talking to Merlin (Hermit of the Green Chapel) about his friend Bedwyr. “He is the bravest friend and truest companion in all the world.”

Not a movie or tv but it really happened…
I didn’t get to meet my daughter until she was 15 years old and she got me a card that said,

“I made a wish… and you came true.”

I still have it and plan to be buried with it when I die.

Gettysburg. God, what a lot of wonderful brave men fought and died.

(Yes, both sides.)

I firmly believe that the entire movie, even the “reveal” concerning Bruce Willis, is a setup, so you’ll believe this kid and his ability, so when he delivers this one moment in the movie, you’ll BELIEVE it…

Which is pretty darned brilliant - it’s too bad that Shaymalan’s later efforts were just “bait and switch” plots.

Oh, and on-topic…
Definitely “Up”

The Notebook

Big Fish (wow, Big Fish really messed me up when I saw it)

In music - “Holes in the Floor of Heaven” (One day shy of 8 years old, my grandma passed away…I was a broken-hearted little boy, blowing out that birthday cake…)
