Envy my new digital camera

About two months ago my daughter accidently broke my high end Canon camera. It wasn’t her fault, but it got busted good.

I came home today and my wife had bought me this:

OH! MY! GOD!
And, she also got me a big fat memory stick!
I didn’t even know this was out yet. I’ve been hinting about a high end digital camera for my birthday, but that’s still months away.

I thought I’d share.

For some reason I assumed you were female.

And I have a cool camera too (I was expecting to say ‘I hate you’ for having a camera better than mine. But you don’t. Except for the megapixel rating, mine is better. HA)

It’s all about megapixels.

I took this with my Camera. It is shrunk for viewing so it would look the same weither it was taken on a 3 or a 10 megapixel version of my camera. I am quite proud of it. Can yours do the same?
Of course your skill with word are about a hundred times better than mine. so arguing that I have a better camera is kind of feeble. I envy your writing, not your camera.

Or ‘words’ even. I have no idea how good you are with [MS] ‘word’

I’m already asking for the EOS 10D for my birthday or Christmas, but at $2k I really think I should stick to a point and shoot model.

Congrats on a fine looking camera, you’ll have to post some shots from it.

What was the model of the one that got broken?

I just picked up a Powershot G3. I lust after the 10D, but, let’s be realistic. That’s not going to happen.

Nice camera, Scylla.

I dunno. I’m still reading the book. My guess is no. You got the Sony with the big lens, didn’t you?
I looked at that one and decided that the portability issue wasn’t worth it.

I still have my old Zeiss Icon film camera that can probably pull that off (provided my skill level was commensurate,) and I also still have a really nice macro lens for my Canon (the one that’s busted).

I can (and plan on) getting the conversion ring for my new Sony so I can do shots like that.

Plus, I have night vision and can see through underwear.

A Canon AE-1 Program
I still have my Zeiss Icon AG, which is a really old nice camera, but I have only one lens for it.
I got all kinds of lenses for my Canon, just no Canon :frowning:

I’m jealous…I’ve been thinking hard about getting one of those, I didn’t know they were out yet. I currently have the Sony DSC-S85 (4.1 megapixels) and the pictures it takes blow me away. Yours has a better optical zoom, (4x as opposed to my 3x) and it’s still fairly small. I carted a big Mavica FD-91 around when they were the state of the art digital camera, and I really like the smaller-sized camera for everyday use.

Sometimes you can get good deals on extra memory sticks, I got two 128 MB sticks for $30 apeice after rebate from Amazon awhile ago.

Ok Now I am jealous.
(p.s. You, or the camera?)

I got the DSC F717. Mine’s bigger than yours

I actually like the form factor of the 717 – it’s more like an SLR and it has a focus/telephoto ring. Very comforting for us dinosaurs brought up on non-auto focus rangefinders and SLRs. I’m pretty happy with the Sony – I was sort of surprised when I ended up buying one rather than a Nikon or Olympus, but it seems as though Sony has brought over a lot of technology from the camcorders (e.g. the night focusing) which is pretty cool.

Lobsang – it may be my laptop, but that picture looks just slightly out of focus.

Scylla – it’ll be obsolete in 2 years.

I’m on my 2nd, with plans for a 3rd.

What I don’t like on most is the inability to adjust speed and F-stop for lighting.

In any case, here’s a great resource:

Mooney 252:

I dunno. 5 megapixels is pretty good resolution. I don’t see that going obsolete soon. And, you need to look closer at the link.

This is the second feature that made me buy this camera.

The first was I wan’t going to get a good digital camera until the lens, quality and resolution was on par with an SLR. The second was I wanted to be able to take control of pictures just like my SLR if I wanted to.

This camera has four manual modes. The first three allow you to adjust aperture, film ASA (100-800,) and shutter speed respectively. Slecting one of these lets you make your adjustment and then it automatically adjusts the other two values for optimum exposure.

The fourth manual mode, gives you total control of all these values, so you can do whatever you want.

Other cool features are the infrared mode (combined with negative image effect gives you x-ray vision. Yes, I can see nipples through a shirt.!)

I already mentioned the lens changeability, the other cool feature is being able to set different autofocus modes depending on what you want, included a hologram mode, which paints the subject with a laser mesh to determine the necessary focus and flash a moment before the shot.

The really cool feature is the nightshot mode. This feature lets you frame and compose your shot in total darkness. Say for example I’m taking a picture of a fox or raccoon. I can set up the shot in the infrared without disturbing the subject, verify focus and everything, and then flash and take the picture in natural color!

I was pretty excited about this camera. It’s my dream camera and I showed it to my wife on Amazon hinting that when it came out that might be my birthday present, but she went and got it for me the day it came out!

The movie mode is decent. It takes MPEG movies, that are about old 8mm camcorder quality. On my 512 meg memory stick that would give me a half hour of video.

Can’t wait till the prices come down on the 1 gig sticks!

Now I guess I get to get the macro lens or the wide angle lens for my birthday.

Maybe if I’m a very good boy I can swing both.
