Epic Song Madness

This thread in Cafe Society, about the merits of three great epic songs from three great bands, gave me the idea for this tournament.

One’s definition of “epic” may vary somewhat, but I think we call all agree that an epic song demands some length. I therefore arbitrarily set a minimum of 5 minutes for a song to qualify as epic. “Greatness” is also rather subjective. Rather than try to come up my own biased list of songs and possibly miss a few great songs, I used Rolling Stone’s list of 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. With one exception, I just took the first 64 songs on the list that were longer than 5 minutes. (The exception was “I Believe I Can Fly” by R. Kelly, which struck me as being unbelievably lame. I replaced it with “Smoke on the Water” by Deep Purple.)

So here they are, 64 epic songs for the Teeming Millions to vote on. Divisions were determined randomly. Seedings were determined by the song’s place on the RS500. May the most epic song win!

15 Whipping Post - The Allman Brothers Band

3 Bridge Over Troubled Water - Simon & Garfunkel

4 Hotel California - The Eagles

12 Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd

6 Voodoo Child (Slight Return) - The Jimi Hendrix Experience

10 Sweet Child O’ Mine - Guns N’ Roses

8 Nothing Compares 2 U - Sinead O’Connor

Division A

1 Hey Jude - The Beatles (No contest)

2 Layla - Derek And The Dominos (Ditto. Every time I hear Tiny Dancer, I can’t help but hear “Hold me closer, Tony Danza” and that’s just wrong.)

14 Baba O’Riley - The Who (Sorry, Dylan. You might be phenomenal lyricist and a great musician, but you’re no Roger Daltrey when it comes to signing, no Pete Townsend when it comes to guitar and you don’t beat him by much when it comes to lyrics, and the Who just rocks out more.)

4 Whole Lotta Love - Led Zeppelin (Tough one.)

5 Suspicious Minds - Elvis Presley (Gotta go with the King here)

6 Both Sides Now - Joni Mitchell (Nice to see Eminem in here, but I really can’t stand Dido, and Eminem has better songs.)

10 Walk This Way - Run DMC (Aerosmith and Run DMC, the first Rock/Rap meld)

9 Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley (Close.)
Division B

1 Stairway To Heaven - Led Zeppelin (Taking their cue from Eminem, a weak entry from Metallica is easily demolished.)

15 White Room - Cream (The pretentiousness that is the Doors just can’t compete with Cream)

3 You Can’t Always Get What You Want - The Rolling Stones (Easy)

4 Mr. Tambourine Man - Bob Dylan (Sorry, E,W&F. You lose out here.)

5 Won’t Get Fooled Again - The Who (Rod Stewart must be destroyed!)

6 Purple Rain - Prince (B52’s: See comment on Rod)

10 Good Times - Chic (It was the baseline inspiration for countless rap songs and Queen’s Another One Bites the Dust.)

8 Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone - The Temptations (Tough, but the Temptations just edge out Dylan.)
Division C

1 Like A Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan (Fairly close. But I’ve always preferred Highway Star over Smoke on the Water. Sorry DP.)

2 What’d I Say Parts I & II - Ray Charles (No contest. At all.)

3 A Day In The Life - The Beatles (Got to go with the Fab Four here)

13 Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd (Shine on you crazy diamond!)

5 The Boxer - Simon & Garfunkel (I’m kind of sick of hearing of the overplayed Iron Man.)

6 Kashmir - Led Zeppelin (Madonna doesn’t even bother showing up for this lopsided one. Arguably Zeppelin’s best song (take that Stairway fans!))

7 Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen (Gotta go with Queen, even if they have played this one to death now ever since Wayne’s World gave it a resurgence.)

8 Free Bird - Lynyrd Skynyrd (No contest. Rapper’s delight would have been better if they cut the length in half or so. The worst thing is when people sing it Karaoke.)
Division D

1 Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana

2 Sympathy For The Devil - The Rolling Stones (No contest.)

3 Bridge Over Troubled Water - Simon & Garfunkel (Umm, who are the other guys?)

4 Hotel California - The Eagles (Yeah, overplayed, but a good song. Besides, if Light My Fire was going to lose, The End should definitely lose)

12 Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd (Gotta go with Floyd again.)

6 Voodoo Child (Slight Return) - The Jimi Hendrix Experience

10 Sweet Child O’ Mine - Guns N’ Roses (How did Stewart make it in twice?)

9 Lose Yourself - Eminem (Much stronger song than his other entry. One of his best.)

Yay! Great “Madness” idea.

11 Love Shack - The B-52’s

Five minutes is hardly what I’d call “epic”, but this should be fun.

Division A
16 I Feel Love - Donna Summer (just to be different. Plus it’s my #1 favorite disco song.)
2 Layla - Derek And The Dominos
14 Baba O’Riley - The Who
4 Whole Lotta Love - Led Zeppelin
5 Suspicious Minds - Elvis Presley (weak choice but I’ve never heard the Neil Young song.)
6 Both Sides Now - Joni Mitchell (only because I refuse to vote for Eminem twice!)
10 Walk This Way - Run DMC (historic)
(pass on the last because I’ve heard neither song)

Division B
1 Stairway To Heaven - Led Zeppelin (unfair though…WTH is Metallica seeded 16th??)
2 Light My Fire - The Doors
3 You Can’t Always Get What You Want - The Rolling Stones
4 Mr. Tambourine Man - Bob Dylan
5 Won’t Get Fooled Again - The Who (vs. Rod Stewart?? No contest.)
6 Purple Rain - Prince
7 Lust For Life - Iggy Pop (sick of this song due to commercial overexposure, but it’s better than Chic.)
8 Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone - The Temptations

Division C
16 Smoke On The Water - Deep Purple (I smell an upset!)
2 What’d I Say Parts I & II - Ray Charles
3 A Day In The Life - The Beatles

6 Kashmir - Led Zeppelin

8 Free Bird - Lynyrd Skynyrd (another close one)

Division D
1 Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana (though Nirvana seeded #1 is kinda lame.)
2 Sympathy For The Devil - The Rolling Stones
3 Bridge Over Troubled Water - Simon & Garfunkel
13 The End - The Doors (vs. the Eagles…haha you funny.)
12 Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd
11 Pictures Of You - The Cure (pity this one will certainly lose…)
7 Maggie May - Rod Stewart
9 Lose Yourself - Eminem (chosen only because I refuse to vote for Sinead O’Connor – at least Eminem has talent!)

Disappointed that there’s no Jethro Tull, Rush, Yes, Bruce Springsteen or Iron Maiden represented…OTOH I see this is based on a Rolling Stone list so I’m not surprised.

6 Purple Rain - Prince
7 Lust For Life - Iggy Pop

13 Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd
12 Iron Man - Black Sabbath
6 Kashmir - Led Zeppelin
7 Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
9 Rapper’s Delight - The Sugar Hill Gang – opposite of the Dylan problem, I acknowledge the attempt of Skynyrds, but it was an EPIC FAIL.

2 Sympathy For The Devil - The Rolling Stones

13 The End - The Doors

12 Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd

11 Pictures Of You - The Cure – one of the few pairs in which I’ve heard both but neither really count as epic, going on preference here.

Fun idea, I’m curious how this goes.
