It’s funny (or sad) that I’d rather watch Red Letter Media’s reviews of the PT than the actual Lucas films. All the reviews are funny and insightful, but the ROTS review (very apt acronym, that) I think has the fewest “haha” jokes and the most spot on technical critiques. In my opinion it’s the best of the reviews.
As a sort of meta-nightmare, some uber-nerd wrote up and posted a 108-page review-of-the-review. I haven’t read it, but from the responses of the nerdlings on the board he posted it to, it seems to miss the point by a far mark; completely misunderstanding the critical technical aspect of why the prequels are bad films first and foremost.
These reviews are great. I gave up on"Revenge of the Sith" when I realized I didn’t understand the plot, but didn’t care (but not in a good way like the first time I saw The Big Lebowski.)
This review lets me see what I missed without the pain of sitting through the actual movie - kinda like MST3K. Thanks for the link.
I don’t understand these reviews. I don’t understand the silly voice, the monotony, or the self-satisfied smugness. To say nothing of the interminal length.
I guess I’m in a minority, since lots of people talk about them. I’ve not lasted more than 5 minutes into any of them. I just think “this sounds like a dick with a learning disability, and no concept of fun or joy”.
But he gets hits, which is his intention, so it works on some level I suppose. Just not mine.
Many reviewers review in character. Plinkett’s character is a psychopathic nerd who both reviews movies and murders women, seeing absolutely nothing wrong with it.
I found his voice annoying on his first review, but he toned it down pretty quickly. I find it no worse than the reviewers who yell at the camera.
The voice is purposely goofy but if you look past that, he has a lot of insight on both the writing and direction of film. They were all totally worth watching.
Yes. The voice/character is set dressing, and is not the reason anyone finds these reviews so interesting. The interesting part is what he is actually saying.
I can understand being so put off by the stupid voice that you don’t want to watch, but I don’t really understand saying, “I only watched 5 minutes and I don’t understand why people like these so much.” Well, I wouldn’t expect you to, if you only watched 5 minutes.
i wasn’t totally suckered in by the youtube response claiming that he had crystal skull and airbender out, but a tiny part of me wanted to believe, and a tiny part of me was bitterly disappointed.
So, did anybody else pick up on Plinkett’s meta-critique? This review is the “darkest” of the reviews and all the comic relief serial killer stuff is toned down.
That’s the last slap in the face. It was much easier to sympathize with Nadine (a character that’s on screen over three reviews for less than 10 minutes) than Anakin.
I watched it a few days ago myself and again, his criticisms are well done and well stated (even though Mr. Plinkett is a terrible person, per his storyline).
(For a little background) My Last Jedi Story involves me getting two tickets through work to see an early show but getting too sick (as in literally vomiting on the sidewalk on Milwaukee Avenue sick) to actually go, so my wife went with our 10-year-old son. She came back and was ecstatic about VIII being the “best” Start Wars movie and the “most woke.” I saw a couple days later and I liked it but I wasn’t quite as enthused.
Comparing it to National Lampoon’s Vacation was a nice move. Vacation is funny because, even though he’s trying to have a great vacation with his family, Clark Griswold stupidly makes the wrong decisions just about every step of the way. Characters in a Star Wars movie shouldn’t be doing the same.
“You might not have even noticed, but your brain did.”
It’s a long review, as all of his Star Wars ones have been, but it’s worth your time. I find it very amusing that I’m likely to have spent more time watching Plinkett’s reviews of the Star Wars movies since Revenge of the Sith, than I have watching the actual movies themselves. I probably would’ve found the reviews more entertaining…
