Escaping from a mental facility

In the UK, you’re either in a psych ward voluntarily or you’re in custody, so it’s not a big issue. Basically, if you’re sane, you can prove it fairly easily, and if not you shouldn’t be escaping. I rather doubt that anyone wants to spend money and effort keeping people in the psych ward who don’t need to be there.
Oh, this is from experience. It was harder to get in when in needed help than to walk out.

I can’t be the only one who read the thread title, caught the name of the OP and immediately thought of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

No, that would be post #3.

This is not accurate. If you are placed into a facility on a psychiatric hold (danger to yourself or others), the staff has 3 days to evaluate you. If at the end of those 72 hours you are deemed to still be a danger to yourself or others, you will be committed (against your will) for longer. You will have no ability to check out and leave until they determine that you are no longer a risk.

Nope, the catch in America is that it isn’t the state, but rather the patients themselves or their insurance companies that are footing the bill for even involuntary stays.

But, But, But, I don’t wanna leave! Nice and safe behind the locked doors. Can’t break the plexiglass windows. Don’t have to work, don’t have to cook or clean, don’t have to deal with the husband or kids. People to help me work on my problems. I’m not fixed yet-don’t make me leave!!

My boyfriend and I went to visit his sister, who was in a “locked ward” after cutting her wrists. She opened the doors to let us in, we visited, and then she walked us out to the elevator. I suspect security was a bit lax on the ward that day…

Doh!

That will show me to ever think my dumb joke is original! And, I thought I read all the posts. Oh well! Sorry, John DiFool. And, I agree!

More should have been added to the story ffs! :smack:

But what you did put has given me massive inspiration for some ideas for my film making project, so hat off to you.

My Grandmother lived two blocks away from the state hospital. About once a month someone would escape and ask to use her phone.

As this thread is a zombie and was bumped mostly for just a thank you, I think I’l close this one. Feel free to start a new thread if you want to discuss something new about this topic.
