I can legally download 3 songs per week from a site run by the Philadelphia Free Library and Sony. Besides the tunes on Live at the Fillmore, what ABB songs are indispensible?
Long version of Whipping Post
Ramblin man
Southbound
Jessica
Midnight Rider
One Way Out
Three songs, not on the Fillmore album? “Dreams,” “Don’t Keep Me Wonderin’,” and “Midnight Rider.”
Have to second Ramblin’ Man, Jessica and Midnight Rider. Also I’m No Angel.
Some of those mentioned are on the full version of Fillmore East. It’s not clear which one the OP has.
“Melissa” is a much-loved one that isn’t.
Not originally an ABB tune, though they’ve played it since. Certainly essential for Allmans fans.
In a similar vein, how about “Down in Texas”?
For straight-up ABB studio records, the Enlightened Rogues album is often overlooked. Check out “Pegasus.”
“Whipping Post.”
Everything else is commentary.
I have At Fillmore East on CD. Beyond that, I have Ramblin’ Man and Midnight Rider on compilation CDs, and I’ve downloaded Good Clean Fun and I’m No Angel.
I really love the way ABB breaks out if the pentatonic blues box, so anything jazz-inflected would be of particular interest.
“In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” is a good example of why ABB is more than a southern boogie band. They were the FIRST southern boogie band, but they are so much more!
The Fillmore East version of Elizabeth Reed is the best I’ve heard, and is my second favorite ABB tune to “Stormy Monday.”
The Gregg version of “Midnight Rider” on “Laid Back” is the version of that I prefer, and I really like “Les Brers in A Minor” off “Eat A Peach.”
“Queen of Hearts” off “Laid Back” ranks high for me as well, but it’s not a true ABB tune.
“Hoochie Coochie Man,” “Mountain Jam” (I prefer the one at Ludlow’s Garage), “Dreams.”
Blue Sky and Please Come Home are both about as essential as songs can be.
Damn, I meant to mention Melissa. Very good song.
“Jessica” – if you’re a piano fan, you’ll go apeshit for this one. If you’re a guitar fan, you will also go apeshit for this one. (Tip – don’t ask a piano player if they can play the solo note-for-note, smartass, unless you’re the one cutting a big check.)
ETA didn’t see you had excluded Fillmore East – that kind of narrows it down. I like a lot from “Brothers and Sisters,” being a giant Chuck Leavell fan – “Southbound” IIRC is a tight groove, with some almost jazzy piano that all hangs together.
“Blue Sky” is a beautiful song, with one of the prettiest guitar solos ever.
Oh yeah, “Blue Sky,” of course. :smack: Also “Revival” is huge.
Some great ones have been mentioned. The ABB were known for call and response, Pony Boy is one of their better ones. Go Dickie!
ETA: Start at about 3:15… sublime.

Check out Eat a Peach for some you may like.
There are a bunch of different versions of the Fillmore album out there, but it sounds like yours doesn’t have Mountain Jam. Get that. The standard version is on Eat A Peach. I’d also recommend Dreams, which is my personal favorite - jazzy and spacey and somewhat indebted to Kind of Blue. And I was going to recommend Blue Sky from Eat a Peach, but if you prefer the really jazzy stuff, I’d look at Kind of Bird from Shades of Two Worlds instead. Les Brers in A Minor is another one of my favorites, but I can’t squeeze Dreams or Mountain Jam off the list. And Les Brers only has one guitar (although there are some overdubbed harmonies) because it was recorded right after Duane Allman died and years before they returned to a twin-guitar lineup.
I’m pretty sure I have the original At Fillmore East, only because I’ve seen other versions with bonus tracks.
Dreams is on my list. I unfortunately heard the Molly Hatchet version before the ABB. I’ll check out Kind of Bird and also Mountain Jam.
