On the subject of Dave Mathews. Boy, it’s nice to see someone who just seems to enjoy recording. Give that boy 20 minutes and he’ll have a new release out. Kinda refreshing in this day and age
Here are some of my essentials that I always recommend to others… check them out at least, you may not like all but you probably will like some.
Guns N’ Roses - Appetite for Destruction, Use Your Illusion
Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti
Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers, Exile on Main St.
Black Crowes - Southern Harmony and Musical Companion and Amorica
Ben Harper - Burn to Shine, Fight for your Mind
The Jayhawks - Tomorrow the Green Grass
Bob Marley - Uprising
The Doors - Morrison Hotel
Jimi Hendrix - All
Alice in Chains - Jar of Flies, Dirt
Derek and the Dominoes - Layla, Live at the Fillmore
Carole King - Tapestry
The Who - Who’s Next
and several blues compilations probably…
But I do believe this is DMB’s first studio album in like 4 years or so. I think in the meantime they have been putting out various live offerings, but
Monte Montgomery - two commercial releases “1st and Repair” and “Mirror” - best described as crossing Stevie Ray, Lindsey Buckingham, and the songwriting/singing of James Taylor all into one on a hopped up acoustic guitar with a great rhythm section backing him up. I have bootlegs of live shows if you’re interested.
Others in the machine…
Freddy Jones Band (power pop/rock with some nice guitar work)
Whale (hard to describe - but I like it)
All (a compilation of old power pop punk tunes off of Napster)
Medeski, Martin, & Wood (experimental jazz)
Try any CD by The Gourds. A lot of people know them by their cover of Gin & Juice that’s been all over Napster, but there’s a lot more to them than that! Lots of talent, lots of range, eclectic mix of styles and very interesting and engaging lyrics.
oh sheesh… where to even begin…
ok stuff that I don’t remember seeing on the list already:
Nick Drake- Start with best of… (then make up your mind on what to get from there)
Jeff Buckley- Grace
Bob Marley- Exodus
The Jam- Beat Surrender
Stevie Wonder- Songs in the key of Life
Miles and Coltrane- Kind of Blue
Wu Tang Clan- 36 Chambers: Enter the Wu
The Roots- Things Fall Apart
James Brown- best of…
Joy Division- Closer
Cocteau Twins- Pink Opaque
Mos Def- Black on Both Sides
Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
Billy Bragg- Peel Sessions
Minor Threat
Fugazi- 13 Songs
Birthday Party - best of…
Pixies- Doolittle
Gang of Four- Entertainment
And who says live stuff doesn’t count. The boy just lives to play.
1993 - Remember Two Things
1994 - Under The Table And Dreaming
1995 - Crash
1997 - Live At Red Rocks
1998 - Before These Crowded Streets
1999 - Live At Luther College
1999 - Listener Supported
2001 - Everyday
So that’s 8 releases in 8 years. No one does that anymore!
Hey all, I’m new to posting here, but thought I’d put my favorite CD’s into the mix…
REM - Green
Tori Amos - Little Earthquakes
Sinead O’Connor - The Lion and the Cobra
The Cure - Standing On the Beach, The Singles
The Smiths - Best I and Best II
The Clash - The Story of the Clash, vol 1
The Ramones - Ramones Mania
The Pogues - Essential
They Might Be Giants - Flood
New Order - Substance
Front 242 - Headhunter Maxi Single (but not the 2000 remake!)
There are a lot of single songs that are great, but for that it’s best to use Napster, like was stated earlier… For instance: Jim Carrol Band - People Who Died, King Missile - Sensitive Artist…the list could go on and on…
When I read your first post, I misunderstood what you were saying. I thought you were being facetious, and ranking on my boy Dave, so I attempted to come back in defense of DMB. After reading your latest post, I went back and
re-read the first one, and realized I had taken it out of context.
The live stuff definitely counts.
(I guess the crack about Classic Rock Weenines distracted me.)
