Etymology "Ditting" - narration technique

A friend asked on another group about the term “ditting”. Apparently it is used in story telling somewhat along the lines of:
1st spkr “Gee, look at my operation scar”
2nd spkr “That’s nothing! Look at this scar I got when they…”

I.e like a type of negative one-upmanship.

Can anyone shed light on this strange word and its origins. And is the usage right?

I don’t think that “ditting” is a recognized word yet. It almost certainly comes from “ditto” which goes back to at least the 1600’s in English and originally was from the Italian.

It just means “the same” essentially.
