I’d be furious if that was given against England, but, and I admit I’m massively bias, we deserve the lead.
…though admittedly to deserve it you need to make goals happen.
I think Southgate and Pickford have effectively solved England’s problems here. After beating Colombia in the World Cup on PKs and Switzerland in the Nations League on PKs, England now stands as good a chance as any other nation in a shootout. No more fear; they’ve got as much reason to be confident as anyone.
A true gift to England. Plus insult to injury after Schmeichel stopped it. England still the slightly better squad, so I’m not that mad.
Very clever possession play by England now.
“Los goles no se merecen, se consiguen” (Goals are not deserved, they are made) - Alfredo Di Stéfano.
And they’ve done it. First final for England in my lifetime, and I’m an old fart. Italy-England in Wembley sounds great for a final, though.
Sidetrack: how the fuck became fucking “Sweet Caroline” the English Euro 2021 song? How came THAT to be?
Sweet Caroline had been played at the cricket for years, probably picked up from there.
Well deserved over the 120 minutes. England had the upper hand for most of the match but they’ll have to step it up again to beat Italy I think.
Sterling was a utter pain for Denmark and Kane is brimming with confidence again.
Funny, you look a lot older.
Only in dog years .
A million Boston Red Sox fans must have traveled to England.
Follow-up question: I see all this talk about how this is the first time England’s been to a “major men’s tournament final since 1966.” There are only two tournaments that qualify for this definition - the World Cup and the Euros, right? Everything else like Confederations Cup, etc. is considered too minor?
Yes, the Confederations Cup is considered a nice warm up for the WC, or another FIFA money grab on the side, if you’re cynical (and realistic). Definitely not major.
I don’t think that should have been a penalty but deserved result. Denmark played very well for an hour and carried a good counter-attacking threat but sunk back after that and were lucky to get to extra time.
Do, or do not. There is no deserve.
A penalty that wasn’t.
Ah, well…
In the 2009 Confederations Cup the United States beat Spain 2-0 in the semi finals and then played Brazil in the final where they were 2-0 up at half time. Brazil came back to win 3-2. If the United States won that trophy it would have been the biggest achievement in the national team history but for the big footballing nations it doesn’t matter.
By the way, will there be a Confederations Cup before the 2022 WC in Qatar? The whole schedule got messed up by Covid, but I honestly don’t know and don’t care.
It was scrapped in 2019. FIFA decided to expand the Club World Cup to use as their big money spinning exhibition tournament. That is the competition where up until now the winners of the club continental championships would play each other and it was almost always won by the European participants
