Euro 2020 (in 2021)

Italy deserved that. Best team of the tournament.

There is such a thing as scoring too early. The wingbacks became full backs as Italy pushed forward.

Who’s the most well regarded English coach at the moment. I know national coaches don’t have to be of that nationality, but England try to use English managers, no?

Rashford gets the booby prize. How the hell do you miss that whole net??

Saka also telegraphed where it was going.
This loss is on Southgate. Negative tactics after the goal, got completely dominated in midfield.
Overrated and overhyped team.

What’s this about?

Booing the Italian national anthem, laser pointers in Schmeichels face.

The English played a beautifully opportunistic game, well suited to its players. They were deserving finalists. Their supporters not so much.

I think their roster is plenty talented. Weak in the CM spot compared to Gerrard/Lampard/Scholes, but their front 3 is about as good as it gets in international soccer and their back line is respectable.

Tactically though? Nah. They should go hire some German or Argentine coach.

Ooof, booing the other team’s national anthem greatly angers the football gods, one would think that English fans would know that.

An Argentinian managing England…? If they met in the WC and England wins he would never be able to return.

Don’t know about football gods: it just pissed me off.

Hah, I was only thinking about tactics and not geopolitics.

I wonder if Simeone is about ready to look for a new challenge.

It’s not geopolitics, is much more importan than that, it’s football.

Trying to be somewhat serious, the hallmarks of great players and coaches include learning from experience. Southgate learned today to keep up the attack, even if you get ahead. Fortune favors the bold.

Irregardless of the result, England’s team looks to truly be moving in the right direction. The performance in this tournament show that 2018 wasn’t a fluke. Furthermore, if Southgate has been as successful as people are saying in establishing a change in culture among the players, that will pay untold dividends down the road.

Now, everybody’s focus (even us Americans) is on earning a trip to the desert next year.

I somehow don’t think they are going to give Southgate the opportunity to learn from his mistake. They should IMHO, but (fortunately???) they won’t.

I didn’t know about the laser pointers, that’s well out of order.

But it’s hard to see it as karma when Italy had, what, 5 yellow cards, including pulling saka down by his collar, and of course a couple of dives.
If we’re going on skill, then I’d say overall it was Italy’s game, but on some kind of fair play thing it would be hard to say Italy was #1.

I mean, realistically, with only 16 months before the next WC, I doubt Southgate is going anyplace. Granted, I’m speaking from an American perspective. I live in Dallas; our primary sports franchise has a nasty habit of holding onto coaches well past their expiration date.

May be, in the same way I was speaking from an Argentinian perspective where we have the opposite problem, if you haven’t won everything you are a failure and must go NOW.

See, that may be the reason that it took Argentina so long to win a major title, even with Messi leading the way. You have to have some kind of continuity.

Completely agree.

If you were going to change coaches, now’s the time to do it. I imagine they won’t since the last two tournaments are seen as a success even though they didn’t beat anyone good in 2018.

It’s a pretty young team though. If Southgate isn’t the guy, his replacement will have chances.
