euro-dopers, milkthistle?

Actually for anyone who might have some experience with this herb(supplement?) Has anyone ever seen any convincing evidence to support claims that it has any efficacy in preventing hepatotoxicity when co- administered with drugs(specifically APAP)? I am specifically asking Europeans because searches usually reveal(aside from the usual fantastical snake-oil type pitches) that it seems to be more accepted as having medicinal value across the pond. Thanks,
Ben

This thread has some links and info on it. This book has some information on European studies on Milk Thistle. I took milk thistle when I was becoming jaundiced for no apparent reason (hep tests came back negative, turns out I have Gilbar [sp?] Syndrome which causes me to produce too much bilerubin at times), I suffered no ill effects from it, so at the very least, it doesn’t seem to do any harm.

Thanks Tuckerfan, I ask because I’ve been taking APAP/Hydrocodone since dislocating my shoulders. All the reading I’ve done about acetaminophen indicates it should not be used beyond 10 days as its metabolic breakdown products tend to accumulate in the liver even at recomended dosages. Havent noticed anything unusual, but I suspect one wouldnt untill damage has already occurred,

My vet recommended Milk thistle for my dog after he had some prednisone for a back problem. Tests had shown certain functions of his liver were diminished, but not severely enough to need a more powerful drug. We gave him Milk Thistle for a while, and further tests showed improved levels - not like a two year old dog or anything, but within normal range for the thirteen-year old dog he is. Sorry my report is not more techno-medical, but I can’t find the paperwork at this moment.
