Euro - VAT for moving?

I did a ton of Google searches for this and can’t find anything definitive. Please help, o wise ones.

We’re considering moving from France to Ireland* (obviously both EU) and we’ve gotten two quotes from movers. Both quotes advised that in addition to the cost for the move, we must also pay a 21% VAT charge.

I was under the impression that VAT was for newly purchased goods. Does it also apply to services?

Thanks in advance.
*Still not 100% sure this will actually happen.

You have to pay VAT on labour too, not just materials. ie. as in construction projetcs.

The UK has a rate of 17.5% VAT, whereas Ireland is rated at 21% for VAT, so it sounds right.

I’m sure someone else can fill in the details…

Thanks, Aro. That is what was confusing me. The French VAT rate is 19.?%, so presumably, if we chose a French moving company, we’d only pay that percentage.

I think it depends on where the movers are based - if they are French, you pay the French VAT rate and if they are Irish, you pay the Irish rate.

Or you could do a “cash” deal, but you probably want the insurance and comfort of having an official contract in this case.

Pergau, I’m pretty sure they have to show proof that the VAT was paid before they can get the stuff through customs.

If anyone wants to make me an offer, I’d be happy to hear it!
