Hello EuroDopers!

I am celebrating my 40th birthday with a 2-week trip to Europe. I arrive in London on 10 May and leave (destination unknown) on the 25th.

I am starting with a visit to my sister in London on 10-12 May, and the only firm dates I have are Normandy/Caen on 12/13 May and Frankfurt on 17 May (I’m renting a car and driving the Nurburgring on the 18th). I’ll have at least one other friend with me the entire time, but possibly more friends at other times.

We’ll have Eurail passes and at this point the cities we have on our radar are Brussels, Prague, Vienna, Budapest and Berlin. No particular order, and nothing set in stone.

Two questions:

First: Any suggestions for the cities on my list, ie where to go? Or any suggestions of better cities?

Second: Following #1: Anyone want to meet for a drink somewhere? We’re not looking for anything specific, just the overall experience. Even if you can’t meet up with us, if you could suggest a decent hotel or area to stay I’d appreciate it.

We’re basically winging the whole thing - set a couple of fixed points at either end and see what happens. The cities selected are ones that I have not spent a lot of time in (other than Frankfurt, which was needed to get to the Ring). Oh, and London, which has my sister. :slight_smile:

Anyone want to come join me for a beer and laugh at old I am?

What are you interested in?

London has a lot of history, museums, restaurants etc.

(Also there have been a few previous threads on the topic…)

I think London is taken care of (my sister has lived there for years).

And sorry if this has been discussed before - I’ll do a search to see if I can find anything.

What we are looking for is some good beer and friendly people first of all. If we can sit in the town square and enjoy ourselves then we don’t really care how old the local church is. I’m always interested, of course, but at some point all the old cathedrals start to run together…

So…local culture first, history second?

FYI, this is AFTER the London and Normandy stops, which will be all about history. At that point we will just be looking to enjoy ourselves wherever we can.
