I was mining for a decent drink (or is that pining?), but the cupboard was bare!
Yea, one of the problems I ran into was there were very few people around at any one time. Half the time I was in my “main station”, I was the only one around. Then I’d hop a couple galaxies over and there’d still be no one around. Eve kinda reminded me of Earth and Beyond, but bigger and with fewer people. EnB felt like a single-player space game with a nice IRC chatroom built in. Eve felt like a single player space game with no other ships in it. It was, well, kinda lonely. And I never noticed any roleplaying (but I seldom do in MMORPGs, irony, right?).
Also, the player economy, well, didn’t work that great. For example, there was an Improved Mining Laser that everyone on chat agreed a newbie miner should pick up. So I hopped into the station and the closest one I could find was 10 systems over. Imagine driving New York to LA when you barely know how to work the car…
But that’s just from beta.
