My sister is taking care of 10 baby rats for her friend’s sister, who had an unplanned rat pregnancy. Never trust a surly pet store employee who drops two rats into a box and says “yeah, they’re both female.”
I went home this weekend just to see the babies - my god are they adorable! They’re all this black/white/hooded mix, and they’re literally the size of mice. They feel so fragile - whenever I pick one up, I’m scared I’m going to break it.
They’re not real keen on being separated from their brothers and sisters - when Wolfie picked one up, it jumped out of her hands and landed on our dog, Goat, who just kind of stared at it and looked confused. It took us a couple of minutes to catch it.
At first they were scared of us, but after a while, they’d sit in our hands. One of them even licked my thumb, which is rat code for “I reallyreallyreallyreallyreally like yoooouuuu!!!”
They’re unimaginably cute.
Now with pictures!
I apologize for the picture quality, I took them with an instant polaroid camera and scanned them.
A whole mess o’ babies. There’s a cardboard box and a log in their cage and if you pick up either, a big pile of tiny rats just spills out. Okay, so it’s cuter than it sounds.
See the two towels in the bottom of their cage? One of the rats got under the towels and started shaking all its brothers and sisters off. They couldn’t understand what was going on.
This just shows you how tiny they are. That’s my sister’s hand.
