Ever been a part of a road show?

I think I would have liked to do this back when I was single. Maybe work for a rock band or circus. Setup, takedown, setup, takedown…

Have you ever done it?

Many years ago the company I worked for had booked the docklands arena in London for an AGM. The meeting was on Tuesday, but we had access to set up from Sunday evening. On the Saturday night Boyzone were playing and their roadies were still humping gear when we turned up on Sunday. We all pitched in and helped them finish off, in return they fed us and declared we were honorary roadies. They also offered us free copies of the latest album but we turned those down. That’s the closest I’ve come.

About three times a year, the court I work for “takes the show on the road” by conducting oral argument at high schools across the state so that the students who would never get to our side of the state can see the court in action. I am the chief “roadie” for these excursions; I’ve been doing it for about seven years now. Depending on where we’re going, I take not only our court paraphenalia (name plates, briefs, robes, office supplies) and digital recording equipment (laptop, microphones, boxes of cords), but sound equipment (speakers and mixer) as well.

I go on one of these trips next week. I can tell you, after seven years, I’m heartily sick of it!

Not the music industry variety, but the corporate securities variety, a few times. Spent a week in Europe, hit 12 countries, 18 cities, in 7 days. Required flying on a private jet. Was sick and tired of it by the time we were done.

It’s what I do for a living; I’m a stagehand (lighting).
