A woman in my neighborhood (I see her at the bus stop every morning and afternoon) was on Jerry Springer. Don’t know when the show aired, but it taped last winter. The show was about “My Mother Stole My Boyfriend!”. I do know that just before she went to tape the show she was all excited about how they fly you there, pay for a really good hotel, great restaurants, etc.
This woman, though I don’t know her well, strikes me as the type for whom this trip might turn out to be the high point of her life. The family has very little money, and she herself doesn’t seem to be the brightest crayon in the box.
I was interviewed on AM Philadelphia as well as some national news magazine show that I cannot remember the name of regarding a shooting I was involved in. I never did get a copy of that.
In the States, I was a guest on an edition of the ‘Leeza’ show that dealt with psychics, fakes and illusion. I got lucky and was actually the first guest on the show, so initially it was just me on stage answering questions from Leeza Gibbons. My segment was all about ‘cold reading’, or how psychics give readings that seem accurate but are actually just made up.
Back home here in the UK I was a guest for the morning on ‘Richard and Judy’, back in the old ITV days when they were the king and queen of daytime TV. Judy was actually ill on the day I was there, so Richard hosted the whole show himself. I’ve also twice been a guest on the ‘Esther Rantzen’ show, back when she had her BBC2 Oprah-style discussion show, and lots of smaller, less well-known shows.
I’ve never been on a talk show, so I’ll contribute a link to a thread on the same subject from earlier this year. There was another one a while back about people who’ve made up stories to get on talk shows, but I can’t seem to find it at the moment.
When I was in college, I knew a girl who told a story about going on Oprah sometime in the early 90s. I don’t remember all the details, but she said that she’d been stalked by an ex-boyfriend in high school. The Oprah people called her to ask if she’d be in an episode about people who had been stalked. When she got there she found out the episode was actually about reuniting former stalkers with their stalkees. She said it was horrible. I have no way to verify this, and I haven’t heard Oprah’s side of the story, but it made me wonder how often people on talk shows are victims of the ol’ bait-and-switch.
Also, the girl I dated in high school briefly dated/saw/went with a guy named Sean shortly before she dated me. She told me that nothing ever happened between them because he suddenly decided that she wasn’t interested in him. About 4 years later I saw that guy on Salli Jesse or some similar show in an episode about players (playas?) who cheat on women. Sean was one of the players.
I was on the CNN talk show Talkback Live predicting bad things for the newly-elected (or would it be better to say court-appointed?) president in December of 2000.
If radio counts, I was also a guest on the NPR show Talk of the Nation talking about a research project I participated in, and my own perspectives on racial diversity on college campuses. I’d link to it, but it says who I am and I like to remain a little mysterious…
