Ever know or meet a spy?

Two guys who are retired (now it can be told) analysts for the NSA. Not very exciting.

We had a CIA guy sit in on one of our Joint organized crime task force meetings, he didnt say much. We all got the impression that someone in the cartel was a CIA mole or informant.

A friend in college worked for the CIA as something like a paid intern analyst. He was an aeronautical engineering major on a trimester schedule, and alternated between school for a trimester and working during the next. The CIA assigned him housing in DC with a roommate who also worked for the CIA. According to him, he was assigned a different route to drive to work each week, and was not allowed to say what building he worked at. His job involved identifying aircraft or their capabilities from photos. Sometimes he was sent elsewhere, and would tell us, “I’m supposed to say I’m going to Buffalo, New York.” He got permission for several of us to visit and stay at his apartment over spring break, and he showed us all around the Smithsonian and other tourist sites.

The coolest event during our visit was while we were walking along the sidewalk outside the White House fence. Police cars and fire trucks blocked off all the streets several hundred feet away from us, and police officers started directing everyone to move outside the perimeter. We had no idea what was going on. Secret service agents came out of the White House gates and headed for us. My friend showed them some ID or paperwork he was carrying, and they let us stay put while a helicopter landed and a bunch of White House personnel came out to greet the Japanese Prime Minister.

My friend worked for the CIA full-time for several years after college, and the last time I spoke to him he was working for a think tank that had something to do with space policy or satellite communications.

I have known a couple but have no idea where they are now. One was a Brit, whom I met in person just once but had great stories from his early career at a fictitious company. One was a schoolmate who went to work for the Company and has, unsurprisingly, disappeared from the lives of his classmates. I only know a tiny bit because our mothers were good friends.

I also know more than one that might qualify as Analyst. I don’t know a whole lot about the jobs involved. But I do know one of them was fluent in 8 languages before he headed to the DC area for work.
