This is getting to be a meme now.

More sober-minded users pointed out that the accident had nothing to do with the company. The truck that crashed just happened to be carrying an Evergreen company container.
Side issue : look at that pollution. I’ve seen similar levels in India.
Of course there’s lots of pollution; just look at all those cars stuck behind that jammed truck!
One problem with being as ubiquitous as Evergreen is, is that their name is going to be seen in Oopsies all over the world. Their sin now will be to be noticed as such.
The first time I ever took the boat to periscope depth, somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic, as the scope broke the surface, I panned across “E”, “V”, “E”, “R”,… and squawked. The captain quickly pushed me aside. He didn’t call “emergency deep”, either, but I was still embarrassed.
I don’t think they were actually that close, probably at least a few thousand yards away, but we didn’t expect to find anything up there at all. Bow nulls and thermoclines can be tricky.
Evergreen. The cockroach of the skies, roads, canals, and the high seas. Who knew?
In airplanes before doing aggressive maneuvers or aerobatics it’s common to do something called “clearing turns”, where you zig and zag some while looking out carefully to ensure nothing is hiding in your blind spots. Also to roll the wings a bunch to look at whatever part of the sky they obstruct in normal straight flight. Once you’re sure nobody is nearby, then it’s time to let loose.
Obviously subs can’t do that visually (hence your surprise), but they can sure maneuver to ensure all sonar blind azimuths have been covered first. Assuming those are reasonably predictable in the first place.
Oh, we had cleared baffles and taken all the standard precautions before coming to PD, but they just weren’t projecting any noise in our direction. With a deep draft and more or less coming in our direction, all the engine and screw noise was blocked (that’s the “bow null”). I don’t remember what the acoustic environment was, but under the right profiles of temperature and salinity, sound from above or below you can get lensed away so that you don’t hear it at all. Going to PD was nerve-wracking, no matter how much time we spent checking for contacts.
Any day now, an EVA Air jet will obstruct a runway.
