Every Immigrant Suddenly Vanishes from the USA...

Sorry darlin’ I forgot about you. I said “the purveyors of racism”. Not “the posters on this thread”. Really, take your time, and maybe take a deep breath. Again, in smaller words the thesis is:

‘Those bad people who don’t like minorities would have fewer target if all immigrants went away. They might be meaner on the remaining, native-born minorities’
Also, I think your caps lock is sticky.

I think in this case I inadvertently misled you into venting your spleen.

There are posters on this board who frequently talk about how good things used to be in th’ old days - addressing things like how men wore hats, and were civil to women.

After you brought up the 1940s, it was funny that they weren’t present on the thread. Those posters were the thing that was missing, not you, or skirts, or Haldol, or anything else. It was meant as an aside, where frequent posters might say something like: “Yeah, where is Surreal Armistice*, this seems like his kind of gig” or whatever.

But hey, keep it up, your contributions are…well, lets just say they’re interesting, and bless your heart.

*A made up name. No Surreal Armistice was found with the search function. If you are Surreal Armistice, why aren’t you posting in this thread, dude?

Yes, he’s from New Jersey.

But some of the celebrities we would lose (for good or bad):

Amy Adams, Pamela Anderson, Will Arnett, Morena Baccarin, Sacha Baron Cohen, Kate Beckinsale, Orlando Bloom, LeVar Burton, Jim Carrey, Kim Cattrall, Tommy Chong, John Cleese, Elisha Cuthbert, Portia de Rossi, Celine Dion, Flea, Michael J. Fox, Nelly Furtado, Vincent Garber, Salma Hayek, Keira Knightley, Hugh Laurie, Avril Lavigne, Lucy Lawless, Eugene Levy, Evangeline Lilly, Rich Little, Norm Macdonald, Howie Mandel, Alanis Morissette, Carrie-Anne Moss, Mike Myers, Sam Neill, Leslie Nielsen, Sandra Oh, Linda Park, Lou Diamond Phillips, Natalie Portman, Keanu Reeves, Ryan Reynolds, Seth Rogan, Jeri Ryan, Jane Seymour, Paul Shaffer, William Shatner, Jewel Staite, Donald Sutherland, Rob Thomas, Alex Trebek, Naomi Watts, Bruce Willis, and Neil Young. (A couple besides Kal Penn we’d surprisingly keep: American-born Mel Gibson and Nicole Kidman)

Man, that’s a lot of Canucks. Can we have them back?

You can have Anderson, Carrey, Dion, Lavigne, Mandel, Reeves, and Shatner.

I dunno, any way you could accidentally send Kate Beckinsale, instead?

Nope, sorry, we’re keeping Kate. How about Victoria Beckham instead?

And if anyone questions my decision not to give up Kate Beckinsale, this video explains it.

I know that the domestic wine industry would end, at least for several years. After the industry corrected itself, I’d guess that 2/3 of the producers would be history (along with half the wine grape production of the country, probably) and the only under-$15 bottles on the market in the US would be from Australia (assuming their immigrants didn’t also vanish … don’t know how their industry is fixed).

So, back to drinking beer and whiskey. Maybe? Anyone know what the labor force is like in those industries (including the grain-growing and -processing sector)?

Worked for Dennis Kucinich.

I don’t want to consider a world without the Trebek!

No more meat. Meat packing plants are almost entirely staffed by people not born in the US.

I believe the OP is Australian Queenslander-and the debate here in AU is an interesting one for a variety of reasons. Some of which include:

The current government has revised a lot of John Howards policies, and has caught hell when the number of boat immigrants has increased. Howard or Rudd they get less than 10,000 a year by boat.

Legal l immigration is the bigger point in Au. I work for one of the big uni’s in QLD (hi Martini) and we cater in a shocking way to students from outside Au. But they pay our bills. As an immigrant I have been treated wonderfully by the government and the Uni I now work for. I am hear partly because of a refugee Tamil who got his PhD in Australia

My wife is German and did her post doc in the US where we met. Her treatment in the US was poor relative to the treatment we received in Australia.

Hello fellow QLD University Person!

You’re absolutely right in the points you make, and I think that the number of foreign students at Australian universities is perhaps unusual in an international sense, but I really like the diversity- my colleagues include Britons, Dutchmen, Indians, Chinese, Japanese, Indonesians, Vietnamese, and even someone from Papua New Guinea.

I’m originally from NZ myself, too- so there’s a lot of internationalism at Uni and I think that’s an excellent and desirable situation that should only be encouraged. The fact International Students bring in lots of money to the Uni is a big help too, I daresay.

Wait, did you just describe Norman Rockwell America as racist?

Well, yes, Norman Rockwell’s America was racist. Even Norman Rockwell recognized it, as you point out.
