EveryBlock is gone, will you miss it?

I enjoyed EveryBlock Chicago over the past few months. While not all the posts were useful, I did learn a lot about some of the scams and crimes that are in my area as well as some good information about restaurants, bars, and coffeehouses.

It shut down without notice this morning:

We’re sorry to report that EveryBlock has closed its doors.

Thank you for having let us play a role in how you get your neighborhood news. Thanks for the contributions, for the questions, and for allowing us to connect you to each other, in many cases to make great things happen in your community.

Final blog post

If you weren’t familiar with it, it was a site that NBC News purchased. It broke down major cities into small neighborborhood sections and had postings on real estate, rentals, restaurants, entertainment, etc. It posted information from 3rd party website such as Yelp, police reports, and real estate listings. It also allowed users to post questions or report information. Posts might be, “Do you know a good place for a date near this intersection?” or "Lost dog found, or “Beware two kids going door to door with this scam.”

I’m definitely going to miss it. I used it mostly to see how many crimes were being reported (very few in my area, but more than I thought).

Yeah I liked reading the digests. The racists who couched their hatred in terms of fighting crime were annoying though. There is definitely a market for hyper local news, it will be interesting to see what fills the vacancy.

my first reaction was ‘what’s everyblock?’, but after reading the description, it sounds pretty cool. oh well.
