My Uncle Gordie spent the first part of his career career laying in the nose of a Lancaster bomber counting ice in Canada’s Arctic and the last part of his career protecting Canada’s Machias Seal Island sovereignty. How could his parents have named him anything other than Gordie?
All the Gord’s I know personally are Canadian.
And then there’s Gord Pinset. Any time you talk about your uncle, I envisage him as looking like Pinset, especially on Red Green.
Gordo Cooper tried to leave the USA but ended up returning. He got as far as the Louisiana - Arkansas border. He tried again with a buddy, but still didn’t make it to Canada. One hell of a couple of incredible efforts through, so all y’all folks might not have may Gords, but you sure had a great one.
That’s the image I was trying to post. How did you do that?
I literally just right clicked on it on Google, chose copy image, and then pasted it. I’m not smart, I just do things.
Ok, just to be anecdotal: My step-father (who, incidentally, just died this past week), an 87-year-old American, was named Gordon, and went by “Gord” to a few older friends. Most of us called him “Gordon,” but the pastor doing his service did slip in “Gord” a few times when talking about him, which reminded me then that he did also go by that.
I think that’s what we’re not supposed to do here. We have to link to a picture, not post the actual picture (as the SDMB/Discourse isn’t supposed to be hosting our punctures). I may not be understanding it correctly, though.
When I pasted it it came up as a link to me.
Hmm - the link now has “discourse” in the name. I think it’s being hosted by discourse. When I click on the pic, it looks like it’s hosted here now.
I’ve known a few Gordons, none went by Gord. A few insignificant data points from me.
All Gordons are Gords, even if they won’t admit it.
Another name that’s popular in Canada and not that popular outside it is Lorne:
Previous thread on Canadian Lornes:
The people who are most known in the U.S. by the names Lorne are Lorne Michaels and Lorne Greene, both of whom were actually born in Canada.
Gordie Howe, eh?
There’s a guy who had a website named Acts of Gord, in which he tells tales of owning a video game store. I think he was Canadian, too.
Correct, from Penticton, BC:
My brother was a Gordon, a Gordy and a Gord. He prefers Gordon now, but us sibs still call him Gordy or Gord. No Canadian connections (other than a dna test finding distant relatives in PEI and Nova Scotia), but he played garage hockey and introduced the rest of the family to the NHL.
