Eve's Flu-Shot Dilemma

I got the shot once – about a quarter century ago – and I still got sick. I haven’t had the flu in ten years, so all you sick people can have the damn things. I have high-risk people in my family and I just hope they’re all going to get one. Me? Those germs don’t scare me. I can take them! Bring 'em on!

Well, I can only speak from my own experience—in my six years at this job, the one year I didn’t get a shot, I got sick. Really sick. My mother’s got a flu and pneumonia shot, though, so even if I’m “carrying” when I visit her, she should be OK this year, kina hora.

But I’m glad my company is “doing the right thing,” even if (as I suspect) they were forced into it. I swear, I’m not the one who ratted them out!

My husband is high-risk and has a note from his doctor to ensure he has proof. But, we can’t find a vaccine in this area. There are some in a neighboring county, but only for residents of that county.

Every year, the flu shot stampede pisses me off, and this year is no different. Gah.

FWIW, I think the line of reasoning that if you don’t get (x), another undeserving person will get (x), is pretty ethically bankrupt.

If you walked by a Best Buy that was being looted, and saw a bigscreen TV sitting in a broken window, ripe for the taking, I think most ethical people would just walk on by and not give another moment’s thought to the chance that someone else will just walk on by and take the television. As a question of ethics (and not of laws), I don’t think that the first person would be justified in taking the TV because of the odds that someone else would steal it after he had left.

Now, Eve, I’m certainly not trying to cast aspersions, but I thought that many others must be thinking the same thing this year. My two cents is just that folks shouldn’t try to justify taking a flu vaccine on the grounds that “someone else will get it.”

Glad to know your company made the right decision.

Right decision, my Aunt Betty–I’m pretty sure someone ratted them out.

Unless you believe the world is going to end tomorrow there will be more flu shots available in January. It’s not like they stopped making them. Drink lots of OJ and put some vodka in it to kill this year’s virus strain.

If you have health problems (like emphysema) then you qualify for a shot and should get one.

FWIW, the only time I ever got a flu shot I ended up getting sick.

pull a robin hood. steal syringes and distribute them to the most needy.

Just for some perspective on the other side, influenza isn’t really a laughing matter. It is a serious illness and should be treated as such. It kills. Yes, for those of us in developed countries, it can be a simple nuisance that is easily treated and eminently recoverable from. But not always. People die from the flu: millions in the 1920s when a flu epidemic circled the globe six times. So it is serious.

I’m not getting a shot - I’m healthy, young, and I’d rather my dose goes to someone else. I’ve never gotten a flu shot - I’ve thought that it was too sketchy, as the strains they innoculate you with might not be the ones that cause the flu that year. Still, in the future I might.

I think you should give an anonymous tip to various newspapers/TV stations. (If you don’t want it to be an e-mail address traceable to you, many of us here would be glad to do it.)

If the media doesn’t pursue it then, c’est la vie. At least you tried and you can take the shot with a clean conscience and a song in your heart.

When that is done, please send me a memo reminding me to finish reading the whole thread before posting.

Preferably on the new TPS Cover Sheets.
