To engage in common rituals to strengthen personal relationships.
To explain suffering in the world.
As a secularist, religion doesn’t help much with any of these for me, but they do give reasons other than science to believe in a God/s.
I’ve always liked Karen Armstrong’s explanation.
Science/logos = learning how to throw a spear.
Religion/mythos = praying for a successful hunt

Religion, at it’s core, is about how people interact with each other, for good or bad.
Science is about explaining how things work.
I could believe that Pele lives in a volcano crater on Hawaii, and still understand that lava is molten rock that wells up through a volcano, coming from the mantle of the earth, often associated with plate tectonics.
I could believe the Demeter is responsible for ensuring a good harvest and the fertility of marriages, and still understand how the seasons, rain and fertilizer affect the size of my crop.

What He looks like is not really important. There is a song “I am everyman” which may give you a very basic idea.
FWIW coming to God allows you to find out for yourself, but you don’t come to God using your head, but your heart. While you can explore science and the like, there is a emotional journey of the heart also and that is the easiest way to learn everything you always wanted to. The path is very simple, follow Love wherever it leads. An newborn infant does not find mommy and daddy by image recognition, but by sensing parental Love (yea I know ‘Cite’ your not getting one :p). That’s how you find God, and learn about everything you need to know. Not letting anything, including religious rules get in your way.
The Scriptures tell us to seek God and we will find Him (this is a promise of God), and God is Love. So seek out Love in whatever form you can accept, it’s a wonderful way to learn, how awesome is His ways.

Those who don’t really know Him personally will sometimes use that name, I usually call Him Daddy, and that name honors Him. It is sad, and makes God sad that people want a proper name to call Him by, as it’s like a small child calling his parents by their name instead of mommy and daddy. People have grown so distant to Him.
