Ex-porn star as HS science teacher?

I love that movie! Horse head bookends! Horse head bookends!

On that show, Dr. Phil said “No one thinks of their high school teachers as sexy.” The dude obviously never had Miss Krueger for social studies. Rowr.

My thoughts are divided on this one. On the one hand, I completely agree with those who say that a person’s past choices should not be held against them. If she was a porn star in the past, that shouldn’t affect her teaching ability.

I also have no problem with a “religious” teacher, as long as she keeps her religious beliefs out of the classroom and teaches the approved curriculum.

On the other hand, I can see the dilemma in this particular situation, where the students have found out about her past and have circulated copies of the video amongst themselves. With high school boys being what they are, I can envision severe problems maintaining classroom decorum, avoiding pranks such as certain photos appearing on bulletin boards, having students snickering behind her back, etc.

I think the school board here was faced with a no-win situation. If they take the high road and keep the teacher on, they will have to deal with student issues. If they choose the path of least resistance and fire the teacher (or not renew her contract) then they are closed minded bigots.

Even though she may be an excellent teacher, is it realistic to assume that the students can forget her past, now that they know about it, and respect her as a teacher?

A former girlfriend had been in a few porn films, all of which were done because she wanted to, and distributed in small amounts (they were primarily fetish films). So far, it’s been a few years since she’s started teaching elementary school, and nobody is the wiser.

Unfortunately, she always has the lingering stress of it coming up, as they were all filmed using her real name, and she does some pretty unsavory acts. So, she constantly has it hanging above her head. For the record, I was hoping she’d use the name Chesty LaThrill, but alas.

Oh, come on, like you wouldn’t have done it! Is there any self-respecting teenage boy in America would would pass up a chance to circulate a porn vid of one of his teachers?!

You gotta think that attendance at parent - teacher conferences would be pretty high with a former pornstar as your kid’s teacher, at least for the Dads.

Since most porn actors use assumed names, what happens if a teenager finds a porn vid starring an actor who just LOOKS like the teacher? Should the teacher be fired? After all, the kids will still circulate the video- and whether it’s really the teacher or not won’t matter.

I don’t think this teacher has done anything that needed reforming.

Okay, this puzzles me. Why? Is it because you would be afraid that the students wouldn’t be taught evolution? You do realize that a good percentage of Christians accept evolution, right?

I went to 12 years of Catholic schooling where science was encouraged and taught on a university level. Most, but not all, of my teachers were Christian and none of them questioned evolution. My father has taught several courses in various scientific and mathematical fields and he believes in evolution while being Christian. Heck, even my mom who can’t do math or science to save her life believes in evolution. Is it something else that you object to?

Well, if it worries her that much, maybe she could change her teaching name to Chesty LaThrill.

These days, any kid with access to photoshop can attach Teacher’s head to donkey-porn.

I think the proper response here would be to suspend/paddle the kids that passed around porn at school. They broke the rules. The teacher didn’t.

Nor should there be any objection to a currently active porn star being a HS science teacher.

I don’t know. First, I think this is one of the things you might want to consider before embarking on a porn career. Especially in the digital age where every picture and DVD is archived somewhere… and might show up 10, 20, 30 years from now. If you don’t care or you’re prepped for this, have fun!

I’m a former elementary/middle school teacher. At the risk of sounding like a fuddy-duddy part of the role of an educator is being a role model. As a teacher, I talked a lot with the kids about what I did after high school. It’s important for them to know what options are out there, but… I mean, how many parents want their kids to potentially end up doing porn?

I just think it would be difficult to retain discipline and decorum when every year the rumor goes around that Ms. X was in a porno, and the requisite response, and the repeated “finding” of tape by the senior class. It would likely diminish the teacher’s ability to, well, effectively teach. Community approval matters as well. I’ll fight against people wanting to fire teachers who are gay, or of a different religion, or who are communists… I don’t have the same will to fight for ex-porn stars.

If an ex-porner can effectively teach and his/her past isn’t a great distraction, I guess he or she can argue that it isn’t an issue. I mean, if we learned that a 30 year veteran was in a stag movie in the 70s, it’s unlikely that anyone can find it or recognize him or her. However, if the teacher had a starring role in Assploits 27 in the late 90s… that’s an issue.

I did think the dismissal of the art teacher in Texas (actually, I think it was in my hometown of Austin) who had done nude modeling was wrong, though. She was an artist, and modeled for a photographer who is an acclaimed artist. But schools do not exist in a vacuum, and the support of parents and community members is vital. A principal, and a school district have to balance these needs when they hire someone.

I have to admit that this doesn’t make me feel 100% okay. In principle, I think it would depend on the individual. Someone who really made what many of us consider to be bad choices early in life might have turned their life around and be an excellent role model and teacher.

What Pochacco said

If she is vaguely attractive then adolescent boys would be letching after her even if she were the reincarnation of Mother Theresa.

I’ve a feeling that the take up of science as a subject would have increased substantially.

Probably her best bet would be to change her hair style and colour and go elsewhere, I would consider it disgraceful if the school did not give good references.

Or my brothers’ Lit teacher… one day they came home looking kind of stunned. There was a new teacher in the school and boy she is hard to miss!

Anyone who thinks a woman who’s something like 6’4" and made to size can’t be pretty needs to see that one

Wow. I wonder how he managed to become a doctor without ever going to high school.

No, no, tdn. You misunderstand. Links–to the movies. (I kid.)

The blog you quoted cracks me up. I can just see the setting for the school staff viewing the film. Would you bet that they stopped the flick after determining that it’s a porn flick and that the science teacher appeared in it?

Priceguy: Good question. I had fantasies about my 8th grade algebra teacher for years. She was incredibly sexy.

I don’t know, a couple of links might be ‘educational’

About 35 years ago my younger brother shagged his remedial maths teacherette.

Maybe that Dr Phil guy was home educated.

Do you even hear what you’re saying?

Are you seriously advocating that the standard for making employment decisions should be “What will get 14-year-old boys going?” I remember being a 14-year-old boy. ANYTHING would get me going. Firing a teacher on this basis is asinine stupidity.

The argument you are advancing is the same one that goes, “We can’t allow people to show that/wear that/do that because it might excite a psychopath/rapist/whatever.” Such as, “If women were allowed to go around with their faces showing, men would rape them.” (Very popular in Saudi Arabia.) Or “If we allow images of women in bondage, however consensual, it will set psychopaths off and there’ll be a tidal wave of killing.” (Very popular with some feminists in the 80s.)

Now it’s “If we allow a woman who had once performed in porn, however private she keeps her porn-like activities nowadays, to teach, it will make her classes unmanageable.”

Smells like obvious bullshit to me. Maybe because of all the other, very similar-smelling bullshit that’s been used in the past.

Here’s the thing. The idea is not to crimp and malform the society of decent adult human beings until it won’t set off any psychopaths, rapists or 14-year-old boys.
The idea is to allow decent adult human beings to conduct themselves as they will, and make the frigging psychopaths, rapists and 14-year-old boys conform to the norms of human society.

Firing the teacher isn’t following the path of least resistance. It’s following the path of most stupidity.

Well-spoken!
