I hope I don’t sound overly cynical, but…
A lot of fund-raising activities are taking place, in response to the 9/11 attack, including now a mega-star fundraising telethon on Friday. Exactly, what are we raising funds for?
It would seem that the biggest chunk of money is being spent by the city of NY, in the search for victims and clearing the rubble. This is huge; however, half of the $40B of federal money allocated last week is earmarked just for this purpose.
No homes were lost, AFAIK. I would assume businesses are insured.
If it all goes to widows and children of firefighters–hey, that’s great; I just wish someone would explain. Even the organizers of the telethon aren’t exactly sure.
Perhaps it’s like blood donations–everybody wants to do something, and giving blood seems like a good thing to do. So the Red Cross now has more blood than they ever hoped for (as of last Thursday they had a 4-day reserve; 3 days is their goal).
