My class is online, so there is no classroom. The quizes are done via the Internet and are graded right away, but you have to go to the college media room in person to take the proctored exams. These are done in the same ‘long hand’ way as a normal class math test, complete with handing in your scratch paper.
How long to you think I should wait until I bug the teacher for my grade? I’ve never really met the woman, so I don’t know how an e-mail saying, “Hey!? Done grading my paper yet!?” will go over.
So, what say ye? A week? Two? A couple of days?
This grade may have a significant impact on whether or not I continue the course.
First a question, you say you have to go to the media room in person to take the exams. Does everyone have to take the exam at the same time? If there is a range of times, be aware that the instructor may not begin grading until after everyone has taken the exam.
Having said that, if you are seriously considering dropping the course, and knowing what your score is will make an impact on that decision, I would send an e-mail that is more curious than nagging and I would do so probably two or three days after the exam, certinly less than a week.
“Hey, I’m taking this online course, and I’m seriously thinking about dropping it, depending on how I did on this exam. I don’t want to be a pest, but can you tell me approximately when you will know what my grade is?”
Give her as much chance as you can to treat this as an invitation for her viewpoint on whether you should drop the course.
“Well, I took a quick look at your exam, and frankly if you don’t get this stuff, you’ll never understand the rest of the course, so go ahead and drop it already”
“You had a few problems, but so did a lot of other people, so if you work your tail off and show up in the learning center there is still hope”
“Don’t drop the course! You’re only a few points away from an A and with a little more effort, we can get you that A”
We have courses like that here in Georgia, called Ecore. I would definitely E-Mail your instructor and let her know your grade on this test will impact your decision on whether you should drop or not.
If she teachs at a nearby university, I would call her office phone number during office hours if she has provided it to you.
Excellent question. There is a window of 48 hours in which we are allowed to take the test. The deadline was Tuesday at 9:00 pm. So, technically, I haven’t given her much time.
I know I made some mistakes on the exam, and math gives me the Sick To My Stomach’s (gotta have it for the major though).
I was thinking of giving her until end-of-day tomorrow and then politely asking, as you said, for a general idea of timeframe. I do not want to let her know that I’m considering dropping the class because that’s still a long-shot option.
The question arose, primarily, because I’ve had a teacher in the past wait Three Bleepin Weeks before giving an exam back, and that was with only 4 students in the dang class. I can’t wait that long this time. It’s too important to know where I stand.
This college has both online and in-person classes and she’s a full-time in-person Professor as well as doing the online stuff. I’ve got her office hours, and about 10 different ways to contact her. I just have to decide the ‘when’ of when to do it!
