I’m not sure what the big deal about this is. I thought we always knew saddam had nothing really to do with 9/11. Links to terrorists and links to the direct attack on the United States on September 11th, are being clearly seperated for partisan spin (both sides). All intelligence reports from nearly every country in the world was pointing out that Saddam, was in a symbiotic relationship with terrorists (Al Queda or whoever, AP article of one example ). The whole 9/11 commission is a joke, and a political fight. Frankly I’m sick of the politics. The next election I believe I’ll write in my neighbor Jim who seems to have good grasp of worldly events, or at least those pertaining to his yard.

This has been deliberately provoked by constant attempts by your ‘President’ and his cronies to link the two, which continue even now.
Its just the teensiest bit more subtle than that. The Bushiviks already know that many people connect Saddam with 9/11, and they have already clearly stated that no evidence for such exists. Once. Not real loud, not repeatedly, but they did say it.
But they are left with a bit of a conundrum: they have fervently declared that the war with Iraq was somehow central to the WoT. Previously, they could just baldly state this and get away with it, the press was entirely supine and the public at large didn’t question such an assertion.
But now they are being pressed. In what way, exactly, is the Iraq War relevent to the War on Terr? The best they can come up with is this Bushwah about “connections”. My mother’s hairdresser’s sister-in-law was once married to a guy who robbed a bank, hence, I have a connection to bank robbery. Really, its like that silly game about how many steps to connect person A with Kevin Bacon.
Their loyal base will defend them so long as they have a shred of plausibility to cling to, and that is what they seek to provide. They’re not trying to convince me or anyone else with the good sense that God gave a goose. They’re not even trying to present a “case”, just the merest straw to grasp at.
Tough luck for them, because the plausibility of that shred depends on thier own plausibility, they are feeding thier chickens with eggs. You can only believe them if you already believe them, no one is going to have thier doubts expunged, this only provides true believers with something to cling to.
They’re hoping that, come November, that will be enough. And they may very well be right.

Reeder, I didn’t check the link & didn’t realize at the time what the cite was from- I just thought the Q was who did we invade after 9-11. Then I read another news story that included the cite, hastened back to correct myself, hoping that you wouldn’t beat me to it, and alas, you did.

Absolutely wrong. All intelligence reports from every country in the world showed that from around 1993 onward, Hussein was pulling in his horns and lying low, basically turning Iraq into a home for sick and retired former terrorists. He did a bit of PR spotting when he provided funds to the families of a few Palestinian suicide bombers on a couple of occasions, but he had no active participation in world terrorism.
The Putin remark to which you linked is being discussed in GD. Interestingly, Bush never alluded to this alleged information when he was trying to get the UN to sign on for his invasion of Iraq. No one in the adminstration ever trotted out this “evidence” of Hussein conspiracies even after we had occupied Iraq. And, as of yesterday, the State Department could not find any evidence of this alleged information.
On the other hand, Putin has already begun making overt statments to support the re-election of President Bush, so this vague statement seems to have more in common with mere propagande than with any actual facts.
