Her: Five minutes.

I voiced a similar objection once, and my wife had an interesting comeback.
“You know when you guys say there’s 5 minutes left in the football game on TV? Same thing.”

The gas log used by @puzzlegal reminds me of my parents. They both had little spiral-bound notebooks, like cops use, and diligently wrote their miles and gallons back in the Seventies. I couldn’t understand why anyone would do this, but it is interesting knowing they weren’t the only ones. I believe my mom carried on this tradition until the day she died.

If you keep track of your mileage, it helps you find out when certain things are going wrong. For instance, I once had a car where dropping mileage was the first sign that the engine timing was slipping.

It also helps you plan certain things. If you have a good idea of your car’s standard mileage, you can make a better guess of how far you can go on a trip, and what the margin of error is on your gas gauge.

Only that guy is presumably having fun socializing with friends. Whereas the wife is taking forever to do simple chores like putting her shoes on.

Or talking to her friend or mother on the phone?

It doesn’t take my wife five minutes to put in her shoes. It takes five minutes to put in her shoes and assure the anxious dog that we are indeed going to come back and not abandon her.
