Experience with Rain Chains

the concept comes from Japan, kusari doi these are lengths of copper chains and cups that attach to your raingutter. It directs roof runoff down the chain, offering a pleasing aesthetic of sight and sound.

Does anyone here have one installed? chain links, or cups, light or hvy weight? Do you take it down for the winter, will the ice jam take down my eavestrough! does it blow around in a good wind even if anchored?

I have a great spot for one, NE corner with a water view behind. But I hesitate to cut away a perfectly new downspout to install a pricy house decoration. BUt i want one… but which one, the arts and crafts or a red patina tulip…

Choices, so many! mailorders, some custom cut, some cheep, none to be found local.

chained to the rain… :stuck_out_tongue:

I did a sprinkler installation at a house on Long Island that had these, about 15 years ago. Upon first seeing them, I liked them a lot, but the rainwater dripped down the chains and formed pits in the sandy soil right underneath them. I suppose one could avoid this by placing some rocks, pebbles or maybe slabs of slate on the ground at the drip points. I’d be a little concerned about making sure water gets carried away from the foundation, too.

I never really asked the homeowner if he had any problems, so I can’t help you out there.

thanks for the input THespos.

I am concerned too with getting water away from the foundation. I have rain barrels at two other corners on my house, need 2 more and then I was hoping to have the rain chain on the corner that gets the least amount of roof runoff.

BUt it is also the side of the house with the garden that needs watering. So I’m thinking a rain chain into a rain barrel, though I prefer the copper or granite bowl in which to end the rain chain and not a plastic tub.
