Explain the Pit to me, I don't get it.

I have no idea of the purpose of the pit. Please explain it and give examples. I always feel obligated to swear, and add inflated passions or it will end up being moved. I never can get the hang of what is supposed to be right. What is the pit etiquette? Please! It’s been obvious to me for a while that I completely don’t get it, and I want to know what is correct etiquette. I always post wrong in the pit, and get in trouble. Give me examples of acceptable and not. This is some self imposed correction and I have a feeling many others are just as confused about this forum. I always feel I have to push the envelope to be in the pit.

Will this be a recursive thread? A pitting of the Pit? The mind boggles.

It’s a place to post things that infuriate you - be it people, places, or things. That’s how I think of it.

As far as I know, the only thing you’re not allowed to do in the Pit is be a jerk. You can basically do anything else you want. However, if you’re going to talk out of your ass you’ll get called on it, just like you would in any other of the other fora on this board.

I think this:
If you gotta flame, do it here. This is the place for all complaints and other discussion regarding administration of the SDMB.
explains it quite well.

Is anybody else struck by the irony of **Harmonious Discord ** needing to have The Pit explained?

You’ve got to have a way for members to complain about admistration openly, otherwise the snarkboards would be semiofficial and 5 times as active as they are. And you’ve got to have a way for members to complain about each other openly, otherwise people blow up and get banned for calling some idiot an idiot too many times.

So you have an official area for complaints, and throw in general complaining in the complaint forum too. This keeps the pissing and moaning out of the other parts of the board, without forcing it underground.

The administration can still ban you for things you say in the Pit, if you’re a big enough asshole. Just because you say it in the Pit doesn’t give you a get out of jail free card. And there’s the common beleif that swearing is only allowed in the Pit, this is not true, swearing can be done anywhere as long as it is appropriate. So you can say “read my fucking post” in Great Debates, but you can’t say “you didn’t read my post, fucker”. But just because you can doesn’t mean you should.

Only a fucking moron could hang around here for seven god damned years and not figure out the Pit.

Well you really aught to swear a bit, the more perverse and obscurely the better. If you chose a target well for your ire and hatered you’ll soon find others joining in. Of course some people chose foolishly and the pit becomes a harsh mistress with the flaming of the pitter. But it is all in reasonably good jest. It allows you to tell people here what you really think of them if they annoy you too much.
Quite separately to this it is also the forum for asking about Mod decisions (since they often devolve into poo slinging it makes some sence to have them here). Also Parody threads supposedly go here, though if they are mild they might get scooted off to MPSIMS.
There is one misterious rule about not having joke threads in the pit, I guess the mods are too guttless to allow anyplace for realy disgusting jokes.

People a welcome to call me names in the Pit. I always feel I’m ussing the pit wrong and will get banned because of being an inept pitter.

Critique this please.

You asserted that the OP should only be agreed with, and that political correctness was somehow involved in other posters’ disagreements. Your posts weren’t incorrectly made, in and of themselves, but some of your assertions in them were, in turn, disagreed with. To be really clear, you said:

Giraffe responded:

Blog = monologue.
Pit = dialogue.

Well, you see, in the Pit, jay-c was free to complain about the other woman using the toilet, and other posters were free to tell her that was a stupid thing to complain about.

Which, the whole thread? Or just your post to it?

Sorry. Shit doesn’t interest me. Literally. Couldn’t get past the second paragraph.

Have any other, cleaner, tasks in the offering, I might take you up on them.

Just my posts.

I expect them to disagree.

I want to know if I passed any boundriess that shouldn’t have been crossed.

I’m determined to get it right once and for all.

Yup. And you were free, Harmonius Discord, to tell them not to complain. And they were free not to listen.

Nurse!

That’s what I originaly thought.
I started to doubt.
Doubting errodes the reality impossed by every conscience on earth.
Enthropy is bad in the end.
This is the End.
End of line

Actually, I’ve been confused, too. I agree with the OP, things in the Pit aren’t necessarily as straightforward as they seem.

If it were a case of simple flaming or bitching about things that leave you irate, I’d understand it a heckofalot more. But I’ve started threads in here that were moved, apparently because I neglected to swear, or something.

It’s odd, and seems like a silly thing for a mod to waste their energy on, moving something from the Pit because it isn’t blue enough, or irate enough, or something. I don’t have an irate-o-meter loaded on my PC, so it’s hard to tell sometimes if my thread is “good” enough for the Pit.

The “rules” seem kind of arbitrary. So don’t worry, Harmonious Discord. You aren’t alone.

Yes?

That’s good to hear.

I worry , that in trying to make it pittable, I go to far, and it frustrates me.
