Explain to me about del.icio.us bookmarks please...

I recently stumbled upon a link to http://del.icio.us which seems to be some sort of bookmark repository. I’m not clear exactly what it’s all about, but it seems to be quite popular.

I’m wondering if someone can explain it to me a bit better than their “About” page does…as it’s left me confused.

Thanks!

You simply store your bookmarks online instead of on your local machine. This has the following advantages:

  1. You can access them from anywhere, from work or home. Big deal for me.
  2. You can give a bookmark a label, and then see all your others with that same label. You can also see everyone else’s bookmarks with that label, which is useful for finding new links.
  3. You can see everyone else who bookmarked the same page as you, and see what else they bookmarked.

Just remember it’s all public and there’s no way to make it private. Here’s my list.

Ok…well that doesn’t seem to be too useful for me since I already have a procedure in place that allows me to bring my bookmarks with me to/from work.

I also don’t want to make my bookmarks public.

However, it does seem as if it might be useful for occasional scanning to see what sites show up on it from other people…to find useful sites and all…

http://www.mybookmarks.com/ is a similar concept, except you can keep your bookmarks private.
