Explain Wonkette to me

I thought about where to put this, but since the blog is ostensibly political and the example I’ve chosen is political, I put it here. Please move if another place would be more appropriate.

So, I’ve been reading wonkette for a few days, just to see if I would like it, and I think there is a joke, or something, that I am not getting.

It seems like every third post or so is this odd, heavy-handed sarcasm but at the root I feel like the author believes the point which the words are making. Does that make sense?

Here’s an example about Oprah:

What’s the deal with this? And why does it seem to turn up in stories focused on Obama?

Or (as I would readily admit) am I misreading the irony as multilayered when it is really just heavy-handed sarcasm?

Any help from someone with more reading experience (on this blog and in general) would be welcome. My guess is that it’s some kind of long-running in-joke that I’m not familiar with.

Yup.

Thanks!
