Explanation for weird coincidences keep happing?

You want an example of an actually spooky coincidence, I’ll give you one:

My ex-husband and I were once lamenting the fact that our phone number didn’t spell anything, because it had a lot of 1s and 0s in it. We decided to come up with some words that would make fun phone numbers. I came up with a two-word phrase, the first a three letter word and the second a four letter word. Just a silly phrase. It was the first thing that came to mind. We decided to see what the phone number would be if it spelled that word. I got the first three letters and said “whoa, that’s the first three letters of my social security number!” then I figured out the next letter and said “whoa! that’s the NEXT letter of my social security number!” and on it went until we discovered that by random chance, the very first time we tried to come up with a cute phone number, we got my exact social security number’s first 7 digits. (And adding the last two digits of the SS# still made the words make sense, too)

THAT is the kind of thing that makes you step back and think “freaky!” Nothing that you’ve posted to this thread would even make me raise an eyebrow, other than your over the top, ridiculous reactions to them.

And we’re telling you that it isn’t uncommon or weird or unusual or unlikely at all. We, who have experience here, are telling you that it’s a very common thing. Why is that so hard to accept?

It’s like the other night. I was walking with some friends at night down a street. Just as we walked under a street lamp, it went out. I could think that was quite a coincidence and consider it spooky, except that it happens all the time. To everybody. It’s almost considered a “phenomenon” and some people actually believe that they have some sort of “power” or “ability” because it happens so much to them. The reality is just that it’s extremely common for street lights to go out, and so the chances are high that sometimes it’s going to happen while you’re close to them.

Some examples from this board. Would you consider these amazing and weird?

Three posts at same time with nearly identical content.

Look at posts #23 & #24. Exactly the same post from two different users (minus a difference in the punctuation), after the thread had been dormant for over a half hour. Yes, the time stamps are a minute apart, but it’s clear that neither saw the other, and were being typed at about the same time.

Thread of someone looking for title of an old song. Thread dormant for over an hour when two people come in with the same answer.

Yeah but for me nothing’s happened yet (and I say yet) that has been a really weird freaky coincidence, but its more that there has been loads of ones that are lightly weird that have built up to make me think WTF!

Like for the example, that thing where there was no posts for like 120 minutes, then two in the same minute. Most people would usually do “Woah, a weird simulpost, oh well, though, its just a coincidence,” yet for me, because these things happen lots of day’s, i’m more like “thats yet another coincidence in a long line. They are starting to get really weird now.”

Also, like i’ve said, as these slightly weird ones keep happening, i’m gonna keep getting more scared about this big one that i’m worried about.

Hah! I had that happen to me all the time, too. My friends were convinced I had some sort of weird psychic energy (as I told them about it and it would happen in their presence, as we were all walking down the street.) I eventually figured out that there was nothing spooky about it, merely coincidence. It’s not like I could control which lights go out and when they go out, and the vast majority of street lamps I walked by had nothing happen to them.

I think thats the wrong link, as number 23 and 24 are a few minutes apart.

Also, how did you find these threads. How can you remember that they had simulposts?

Why do you think these coincidences are bad? When I had the repeating number thing seemingly following me around, I saw that as an open of “good luck,” and, indeed, that was a time of my life that coincided with fortuitous events. Why do you think your omen is a sign of something bad about to happen?

Do you define 1 minute as “a few minutes”? There are three different links there.

Post 24 is 56 minutes later than post 23.

Also, how did you fins these threads. How did you remember that they had simulposts.

Why won’t you believe us, most of us being considerably older than you with a lot more life experience, when we tell you that little things like you’re describing happen all the time to everybody?

What link are you looking at? Try it again.. Look at the posts by silenus and Fear Itself, which are #23 and #24 on my computer.

ETA: I think I see what you did. Like I said, those are three different links. The first link is self-explanatory, so I didn’t notate it. The second link takes you to the above. The third link is yet another example of a simulpost.

Search “simulpost.”

ETA: I should also add that simulposts are usually only brought to attention when the content is the same, to either clarify why there are two posts in a row with nearly identical content or to point out an interesting coincidence. The simulposts in this thread, though, would not have attention brought to them, as they are not the same content, and not otherwise interesting.

Because I think I’ve also got some case of solipsism (read post 43 on this thread to find out more).

If you insist.

What?

You seem very determined. I don’t think we can talk you out of it.

I think he is a troll.

On a board dedicated to fighting ignorance, I think we can all say that this was indeed a valiant fight.
