Extending the range of my wifi network

I have a linksys 802.11b router connected to my cable modem. I have a small shed that I use for a workshop in the corner of my property which is perhaps 100 yards from my house. I would like to have internet access out there. I have heard of a few ways to accomplish this. One is to use a repeater, but the router isn’t very far from the corner of the house as it is. Another is to use a product that sends the signal over electrical lines. I have the shed hooked up to the main electrical panel through a sub panel.

Are there other options? Is one of those the most viable? Are there any issues?

Thanks for your help,
Rob

100 yds should be an easy shot with a directional antenna and minimal feedline losses on the client side.

Pick up a WET11 for around $30 on ebay. Google for WET11 and POE and you will see how this can easilly be modified to take power using cat-5 cable. Take the WET-11 out of the case and install it in a Rootenna Locate the rootenna where it has a clean shot at the house. Total cost ~$100.

100 yards is just beyond the reach of reliable ethernet cabling, so that option looks to be out. I would probably:
Get a wireless access point (not a repeater), connect it via an ethernet cable to the existing router and install it in a weatherproof enclosure on the outside wall of the house. if this alone doesn’t provide sufficient signal strength, you could fit directional antennae on both the access point and the network card at the far end and point them at each other.

I had the same problem. only at about 40 yards distance. In my case, the shed is metal, so it pretty effectively blocked the signal from the house. My solution was to put a wireless access point in an upstairs window in line-of-sight of the shed. This worked until I closed the door. :frowning: So I added a wireless repeater in the shed and put the antenna on the roof. I used the original antenna that came with the repeater and a short extension cable. It works like a champ. I am using it right now. Total cost, about $80.

If I had an external antenna on my laptop, I wouldn’t have needed the repeater, just an extra antenna and extension cable.
