Can I cook extra long grain rice in my rice cooker?
I’ve never tried it before. Do I use the same amount of water I would for short grain? Any other suggestions?
If your rice cooker is one of those nifty fuzzy logic types, you should be fine. If it’s not, I have no clue. I bought a rice cooker so I didn’t have to think about that kind of thing.
It goes by volume I think, not grain size. I’ve never had a problem with long grain, yellow, or any other kind in mine and it’s a mid-range rice cooker pricewise. Though of course if it’s long grain brown rice the cooking time is a LOT longer, but that’s any brown rice.
Thanks - I guess we’ll try it and see what the old Zojirushi can pull off.
I don’t see why not; for most rice cookers, the way they work isn’t exactly “magic”, but it’s brilliant in its simplicity.
The cooker heats the water up to boiling temperature and cooks the rice. While this is happening, the cooker monitors the internal temperature. As long as there’s water, the temperature can’t rise above the boiling point. When all the water is gone, the temperature begins to rise, at which point the cooker realizes, “Okay, all the water’s either absorbed or boiled off!” and turns itself off. Like I said, simple, yet brilliant.
So long as you put in the proper amount of water, I don’t see how the rice cooker could possibly fail. Rice is cheap; try it with the same amount of water you use for short-grain and see what happens.
I think long-grain rice actually works better in a rice cooker. If you overcook short-grain rice it turns into goo. The only concession I make is to let it steam a minute or two longer after the cooking is done.
That’s why I’ve never bought a rice cooker, as much as I’d love one. I’ve looked at the instructions which come with every rice cooker available in Sydney and none give times or volumes of water to use with brown rice.
It’s the same formula as for cooking it on a stovetop. Usually 1 cup brown rice to 2 cups water. It takes about 45 minutes or so. The rice cooker will turn itself off when the water is all absorbed.
See, I knew I’d get the answer on this board eventually. Thanks needscoffee. Now you’ve also managed to remind me I haven’t had a cup of coffee for at least an hour.
Yes, you can. In my cooker, I use 1 cup of rice to 2 1/2 cups of water for brown and long grain white.
Please note that I don’t wash or soak the rice beforehand.
