Extreme Makeover - Home Edition 7 March, 04

Wow.

Wow. Wow. Wow.

Just. Plain. Friggin’. Wow.

Please tell me that someone else saw this.

Libertarian,

I saw, and I wept. That is the second time this show has gotten me to break down. I was glad to see that the actually picked a family that was REALLY in need this time. It is great to see that someone is throwing all of their money into a show that makes a difference.

I was fine until her oldest son started crying.
Dang.

And I give the mom a LOT of credit- she’s 27/28? Adopted two kids, has one of her own? Wow. Amazing.

This show has often given me the weepies- the one where they flew back the soldier husband? Tears. Lotsa tears.

My face was a waterslide from the opening salvo. It was like heaven coming to earth. Just when I would be thinking nothing greater could be done, something greater would be done. And then, the job. Gah. I’ve never been so stunned by joy — just imagine how the family must have felt. God bless them. And dammit, God bless Sears, too. I’m going to buy something from them even if I don’t need it.

Please forgive me, but I don’t know this show. Where/when is it on?

Monday nights. ABC. 8:00 Eastern.

Ty Pennington oversees a massive makeover of an entire house while the family is sent away to some exotic place. They do it all in one week. And it isn’t amateur goof-balls cheap cardboard crap like on Trading Spaces. It is expert workmanship and high quality merchandise. Hundreds of people practically rebuild a home from the gound up. (This time, that was literally true.) And it almost always has extra touches, like last night a visit from an astronaut and two of Disneyworld’s own designers.

This episode, they took what was basically a hovel where a social worker (single mom) cared for her own child and two adopted foster children. When they came home, they had a whole 'nother story, and the house was just amazing. Beautiful. Elegant. Appointed with top of the line appliances. Furnished with Thomasville and Broyhill. And the bedrooms! — the little girl got an undersea fantasy world. The younger brother got an astonomical observatory with a roof-mounted telescope and in-room computer control. The older brother got a hip-hop room complete with breathtakingly beautiful mural and sound equipment. The mother got a gorgeous master bedroom suite with spa. The backyard became a fantasyland with a river and fish and a place to camp, with an incredible grill and patio for barbequing.

Near the end, when they opened the garage, the older brother, 18, saw that his dilapidated junker car been transformed into a stunningly restored classic — done by the guy who designed the Batmobile and other assorted famous cars. His mother’s condition for driving the car had always been that he get a job and license. At the end of the show, the contractor whose company did the structural remodelling offered the kid a job complete with training.

It was just… I don’t know the word. Phenominal.
