Eydie Gorme, dead. Primary Suspect: The Bossa Nova

I know, “innocent until proven guilty” and all that, but I personally blame it on the bossa nova.

CNN Story about her death.
Steve was by her side when she died.

Goodbye, Eydie!

She could really belt out a tune.

RIP Eydie.

Poor Steve. :frowning:

I remember them from repeat performances on Johnny Carson. Good singers, although she always seemed to be trying to upstage Steve.

Good grief, I thought they were old when I was a teenager—in the 1970s! They were ubiquitous on TV variety shows and talk shows, dancing and singing our parents’ music. I had no idea either one of them was still alive.

I wonder how Steve will get along without her after all these years.

Well, I’m too young for Eydie Gorme’s heyday. If anything, I remember her name mostly as the punch line of a completely lame joke that was told by Bruno Kirby’s humor-challenged character in Good Morning, Vietnam.

Steve and Eydie were quite a big pop duo at one time. I have several of their hits in a Time Life cd collection. I never saw them live.

R.I.P. Eydie

I know Steve was a regular on Carol Burnett’s shows… am I misremembering or did Eydie show up there, too?

Indeed she did:

Here is a duet between Eydie and Carol.

Here is a link with some other appearances.

. . . not to be confused with Idi Amin.

Hey, did anyone ever see them together?

“Blame It on the Boss, Uganda”

Up until maybe 8 years or so Steve and Eydie would perform annually at a local performing arts center here id San Diego. Great chemistry. Have to assume declining health was the reason the performances ceased.

Beautiful voices, beautiful love story. More of my childhood just fading away.

I wonder where the songwriters got the idea that Bossa Nova was a dance.

I vaguely remember them appearing on game shows together, like sharing a Hollywood Square.

Even in cases where it’s not officially correct, I think using the name of a style of music to refer to the dancing done to that particular style of music is perfectly reasonable shorthand.

And, since the song was written by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil I think their idea was probably along the lines of cha-CHING! They were pros among pros and they were well familiar with the “Dance Craze Song” formula. Bossa Nova newly bleeding through into pop music at the time, in a trendy way, I’m sure it seemed to Mann and Weil an idea that would provide a guaranteed hit. They knew how to write a hit.
