Eye injury / stye resulting from grass seed

My husband and BIL went for a ride on an ATV the other day and ran through a bunch of tall grass, releasing all the seed, which covered them. My husband was not wearing eye protection at the time. He had an immediate reaction to it, however we assumed it was because he has seasonal allergies, so we bought Visine Allergy and that seemed to help.

Today (three days later) his eyes are bothering him again. We looked underneath his eyelids and there are large styes beneath both. We’re unsure if grass seeds worked there way under the skin on the inside of this eyelid (they’re sharp) because we can’t see anything other then the stye itself.

Questions: As it is not really painful, we aren’t headed to the ER. How long should we wait though? Opinions on if this is urgent or not (his vision is not affected)? Second, has anyone had anything similar happen and how’d it turn out?

You are not my doctor, we will seek medical advice and intervention if needed, etc.

If they’re actually styes, they usually take two or three days to go down.

However, since you mentioned an allergic reaction and then this, I’d probably (if I were him) take one or two Bendaryls before bed for the next day or two to see if that helps speed things along.

He has been taking allergy medication the last few days, and it did help, but it’s worse today again.

I suppose we’ll probably just keep on eye on it (hardy har). Husband is worried about possible damage to the conjunctiva, but I don’t think that’s likely.

They could take weeks to go down on their own, hot moist compresses will help the process along. They work for me if I can do them every 12 hours for a few days straight.
