Eye makeup question

Isn’t there a (waterproof?) liner that doesn’t run or smear, but you can kind of rooooll it off. It’s almost like a thick wax when it dries. I’ve never used it but I’ve seen people roll it off.

I will head over there directly.

Funny, I did used to wear a LOT of makeup as a dancer. But some how eyeshadow was never used. Lots of liner, mascara, etc…

Thank you for the suggestion, that was exactly what I was looking for. I kind of feel that if I go to just any beauty person they won;t know how to treat my skin, just as most salons have NO idea what t o do with curly hair except make it big,

I use a product from Benefit called “Get Even”. It’s an oil-absorbant powder that comes in a compact case. I put it on my lids, lashes, and under my eyes before the eye makeup (and I wear contacts). It prevents smudges and smears. It’s also a great finishing powder in hot weather- your face won’t look greasy.

anu-la1979, once again you have come to my rescue entirely unintentionally. Finding makeup with a yellow base has been a major PITA and a source of minor anxiety for me since I was a teen. I’m doing the consultation with Vasanti this weekend, I’m thinking.

What does one look for in a blue eyeshadow for brown eyes/olive skintone, anyways? I have a longstanding fear of blue eye makeup.

If you’re not going for dramatic, I usually just brush sheer/pink glimmery (not glitter, more pearlized) cream shadow from the inside corner of my eye to the crease and up to the brow. The glimmer accents my browbone and makes my eyes look a little bigger. The white/sparkly in the corner of your eye is a theater trick, scaled down from bright white to sheer shimmer. It’s very natural, without going, “HI, THESE ARE MY EYES.”

On my actual lid, I either just put more of the same sheer pink or wear a sheer brown. Sweep of blackest black mascara to bring out my green eyes and I’m done.

Heh, bright shadow is tons of fun, although being 24 (with a young face, too), I guess I fall into the ‘young enough to get away with it’ category.

Today I have a sheer whitish shimmer all over* with a medium cocoa (with bronze shimmer) applied right above the crease** and then an extremely bright limey-spring green with tons of gold shimmer applied to the inner corners.

I also do bright blue-toned purples, bright turquoises, etc.

For shadow shades, try to find colors that are opposite your eye color but a tone that’s similar to your skin (so blue eyes, get browns or, if you have skin that can wear orange, shades that have a bit of peach/coral. Green eyes get purply shades, etc). My eyes are technically grey with an orange ring, but everyone (including my digital camera) sees them as green. I have purple glasses and the color makes my eyes look fantastic.

And remember, just because I love bright shadows doesn’t mean that you have to. You can get muted versions of every color out there. There are very soft greens, purples, blues, pinks, etc.

  • I’m white enough so that this is more of a neutral instead of an actual white.

** I have extremely deep-set and smaller eyes, and keeping the lid very light and doing the darker color at the upper area of the crease helps make the eye look a lot bigger.

Queen Bruin, Anaamika, no problems…I cannot recommend them heartily enough. I have mentioned them off-hand once in a while.

Q.B.…ME TOO. I have the exact same skintone as the model for V4 on face base. When I popped on to their website from a search on Makeup Alley I was blown away that for the first time in my life some model had the EXACT SAME SKINTONE (I am highly highly yellow) with as much yellow. I’ve seen your pics, I think, you used to post as Sausage Creature, right? I’m thinking they’ll give you V1 or V2…I think that’s what they give for light-skinned Mediterranean women. My little sister is very fair-if Vasanti doesn’t work out, email me and I’ll ask her what products she uses because the lucky biatch got a perfect colour match out of Maybelline.

When you fill out the Vasanti form you can tell them what type of look you are going for in terms of foundation, eye colour, lipstick…anything you want. If you need to return the products to switch out the colours, they do that for you. The one thing I recommended to them is that they start making “sample size” swatches for those of us who are leery of buying makeup online. BUT, I will admit that they did a perfect colour match and consultation for me (they told me what I already knew, that I was V4 for the facebase).

Maybe I’ll go look up my old blog review and post some of it on here so you can get the lowdown on the products I bought because I can’t remember their name right now.

So far I’ve found the quality of their face base, liquid face thingie used as coverup, lipstick and blush to be very very high (NARS/MAC quality, finely milled, highly pigmented). I don’t think the lipglosses are worth it…I bought Bali and am somewhat disappointed…though I may get the Baltic one or whatever.

Incidentally, in case they don’t work out for you…also try Prescriptives, which is well known for having yellow-based tones.

I like them because even if you don’t buy directly from them-they can give you an idea of what will look good on you as they use models in our skintones. Like I said, the women who founded it used to work for NARS and MAC and use many of the same things you find in those makeup lines (pigmented, finely milled) and target the colours towards S. Asians, East Asians and Mediterranean women.

My cousin showed me a prom picture where she had her makeup done by MAC and…I mean they did a nice job and everything but most white people don’t know what to do with dark skin, and are even WORSE at desi skin. They put really really dark makeup on her…I used my Vasanti products, which aren’t even her exact colour shade (I’m yellow based, she’s more neutral) and gave her the look she’s always wanted-light, peachy, young, girlie. For once in her life she could actually see what she might look like with foundation that closely matches her skin colour rather than sitting like grey ash on top (what happens if you go lighter) or darkening her by 4 shades and making her neck look like a different shade (what happens if you go too dark).

The only trick is application…if you guys decide to buy, I’ll write up a post on how to apply the face base and liquid coverup to make it look like you have very little makeup on.

Vasanti Cosmetics

Uh, I do NOT work for them but I do blibber on endlessly about them to S. Asian women…

Yep, that’s me. Thank you again, you ROCK!

I have been using the same eyeliner pencil from Lancome for a little short of seven years now, and more than half of it is still left. (Granted, I only wear eyeliner 1-2 times a week.) I’ve never had a problem with it migrating - it stays where I put it, without the heavy, dramatic line you can get with a liquid liner. It does cost real money; I think I spent about $20 on it then, but I’ve definitely gotten my money’s worth. If it lasts me another seven years (and it looks like it could last longer), I’ll have spent less than $1.50/year on eyeliner, which I think is pretty good.

Well, psycat90 and katie1341’s tips seem just about my speed…I’m a drugstore-makeup gal, for sure. But I think this has turned out to be a pretty interesting thread. I don’t wear much makeup because I just don’t like how it feels on my skin, but I still have a lot of fun putting it on and I’m always amazed at how much of a difference it can make.

I love Lancome! I almost always buy drugstore makeup, but on the occasion where I DO get to the department store, that’s my counter! Their mascara is awesome, too.

Unrelated to eye make-up:

Is there a Bare Essentials (sp?) product that isn’t so shiny? I’ve been wanting to try this product for ages, but the shine thing is geared toward younger women, I think. I don’t want to spend a lot of money if it’s just going to accentuate my (ahem) age. Do over 40 (or 50) year-old women use this product?

thanks Kalhoun and Purl … I’ve also got a lot of good tips here (and it’s interesting learning about makeup for Asian women!)

I use either Bobbi Brown’s gel eyeliner (it’s more like a pasty wax than a gel) or good ole L’Oreal “Lineur Intense” felt tip liquid eyeliner. Great control.

VCNJ~

That’s what the Mineral Veil is for. I don’t have a shiny face at all.

I love the stuff. Wish it wasn’t so expensive, though. Also, I wish it was not as time-consuming to put on… those five minutes just really eat up my time.

Thanks! I got a $25 gift certificate for Christmas (Ulta) and I’m going to take the plunge, I think.

MAC’s liners never smudge on me. Their Liquidlast Liners lasted me a whole day at the waterpark. Shu Uemura’s eyeliner pencils are also amazing (but pricey, I must admit).

You could also try eye-makeup base. There’s one from Urban Decay that’s supposed to work wonders - the name escapes me right now. Have you tried the website http://www.emakemeup.com ? Their product reviews are very helpful.

I’ve fallen into the habit of wearing makeup whenever I leave the house, but I don’t wear bright colors unless I’m going out to party. Bobby Brown has a wide variety of subtle eyeshadow colors that look lovely without screaming for attention.
