you mean true total darkness, but it’s at least common, I don’t think a deep cave or a mine is total darkness.
No insult, OP, but I’m not sure if you’re even being serious. Do you literally not know why the eyes cannot see things when the eyelids are closed? That’s like asking, “Why can’t I put food in my mouth when my lips are closed?”
I’m being serious, sometimes, I’m just in the know.
I closed my eyes just now and saw a very-much-not-dark color – the after-image of the bright screen I was looking t. It persisted for some while.
