F Merrick Garland. (He won't be going after anyone)

To be fair, Grrr already conceded that Smith might actually get shit done.

Others haven’t been so open-minded. For example, @The_Librarian.

I’m very happy to be proven wrong.

As am I. My only worry now is pardons.

No he didn’t. Luckily Smith picked up the ball and ran with it.

I’m sure Merrick wished that he was the one who chose Jack Smith to conduct the investigations.

Hmmm… somehow they indicted him without saying the magic words.

He clearly didn’t wish he had done it sooner. We still don’t know if he acted in time.

Let’s just move those goal posts another couple dozen yards.

The claim of the OP was that Garland would styme any possible investigation of Trump. That has clearly been proven false.

@Aspenglow has taken a great deal of shit in this thread, but has basically been right on the money. Justice works slower than we would like but we would get there eventually. For once be gracious, admit you were wrong, and enjoy the good news.

That is true. It’s also true that @Aspenglow has dealt a lot of shit in this thread. They and those who agree with them have been smug and dismissive with those who have a reasonable difference of opinion.

But at least, as far as I know, @Aspenglow it graciously enjoying their vindication while others reopen this thread to childishly goat over having won something.

Well, congratulations, I guess. I’m happy to be proven wrong and I can see that you all are happy to have proven us wrong. Enjoy seeing us driven before you, the lamentations of our women etc.

One only need look at how the goalposts are moving and complaints keep coming to see the “smug and dismissive” in play.

So what legal consequences has Trump experienced so far? How much has he paid in fines? How much time has he spent in jail?

My recollection is none, but I bet he has lost judgements. My question is whether he’s ever actually paid a fine as required by a court. For this thread, I suppose I should limit it to “since he was president,” but I’m also kind of curious about ever (but don’t want to start yet another Trump thread).

This an interesting interpretation to put on an invitation to enjoy the good news but if that’s how you celebrate who am I to complain.

Yes, but did they pay or weasel out?

Your article doesn’t say, but looking around, Trump Organization Pays $1.6 Million Fine for Tax Fraud Conviction does: “The New York County Clerk received the payment in two separate checks on Jan. 24, according to a clerk who confirmed matter-of-factly that the checks didn’t bounce.”

Well, that’s pleasing, though arguably more of a consequence for the corporate entity than the individual.

Agreed, but that was just the start. It was the first time he or his organization faced consequences for their shenanigans in a big way. And this wasn’t just a lawsuit judgement, those were multiple felony convictions.

It was the amuse-bouche of legal consequences.

From that CNN link (dated Jan 23, 2023):

The Trump Org. entities have 14 days to pay the fine

I’m guessing no.

The judge overseeing the lawsuit put an independent monitor in place to review the Trump Organization’s financial statements and business decisions. He recently denied motions to dismiss the case and said he considered sanctioning Trump’s attorneys. The trial is set for October.

My bold

My reading comprehension isn’t what it used to be. So… did he pay it?

Ninja’d by @Dr.Drake

This is exactly it – I wanted to hear from these folks about how happy they were that they’re wrong (similar to @RickJay who I remember gleefully celebrating his earlier wrongness when the Democrats ended up winning Georgia in '20).

This was my claim. I will be overjoyed to be wrong but I’m not wrong yet.

If it’s really an invitation to enjoy the good news then I have overreacted. It’s unfortunate that it was never described as such until a reply to my comment so I’m not sure how I am to distinguish between such an invitation and an in-your-face end zone dance. To the extent that that was not intended I apologize.

I also apologize to @Chisquirrel for moving goal posts that I never set in the first place and for complaining about the earlier "smug and dismissive"comments in this thread only to be smugly dismissed.

But, again, I am greatly relieved to have been proven wrong and happier than I have been in months.

I’m extremely happy that Jack Smith has been going after Trump. I’m happy that Garland appointed him no matter what else I think about Garland.
