Weirdly, I had one of those today as well but it was a poorly (like c.2022 quality) rendered Mother Theresa on a crocheted riding mower. Don’t ask me. I didn’t click or expand it to read the 10 facts about BMW and actually just blocked the group.
Ha! I recently saw this weird-ass fingernail sand dog too!
What’s the group? I wouldn’t mind seeing some of the other crazy stuff out there.
It’s called “Boomers getting fooled by AI, again.”
(It’s not just laughing at boomers though, mostly strange ai art that gets passed around social media. And often fools people, not just boomers.)
There are many FB groups for AI. Some include
Cursed AI
Wholesome AI
Blursted AI
Creepy AI
Dark Visions AI
Once you join one you will start seeing recommendations for others.
There’s a certain irony to the smug commentary about how ‘boomers are falling for it’. Most of the fawning comments on this AI slop are bots. If you think boomers are falling for it, you are also falling for it.
Here’s an AI image shared by one of my FB friends today where the comments appear to be coming from real people.
Yeah, I figured the “Wow” and “Beautiful” responses to AI crap were from bots.
I was getting a shit ton of AI bullshit gardening and Jesus “why doesn’t this garbage trend?” postings on FB. I virtually eliminated them by following a bunch of groups relevant to me which post decent stuff, so my feed is cleaned up.
If you leave a vacuum, FB will fill it with .
In case anyone isn’t aware, you can look at just the feed of posts from your friends. That way you don’t see all the suggested content. I’m not sure how to do it from mobile, but on the left column on a PC, there should be a link for Feeds. Under that you can look at the feed for Friends, as well as a few other categories.
I like the skillfully placed hearts over all their hands
I don’t really fault people for non-critically responding though. It’s a generic picture of some old people and not claiming anything outlandish like making a 20’ Jesus statue out of clam shells or a tree of rainbow bananas. There’s no real reason to give it more than half a glance. It’s the AI equivalent of saying “My aunt got sick last night” and responding to the obligatory statement of sympathy with “I don’t even have an aunt! I tricked you so hard, don’t you feel stupid?”
Yeah, I noticed that.
But even half a glance should tell you that the bottom image isn’t a photograph. Even if you have to look close to find actual distortions (AI is getting much better) it has a waxy, plasticy look.
Well, given how much stuff is post-processed and Instagram/Snapchat filtered these days, a lot of legit photos look like trash. I’ve also been staring at AI images for the past several years for it so I’m sure my eyes for it (on a 1440p screen) are different than some 75 year old on their phone or iPad who only tangentially knows that AI imagery is a thing.
Ultimately though, I think it’s just a low stakes thing. It doesn’t stretch credulity, provoke some emotional-political response, or whatever – just “Oh, nice pic.”
I could AI gen a picture of a toad on a rock and post it to Facebook saying “I found a toad” and probably get friends saying “Nice” and “Neat toad”. Not because my friends are idiots, but because none of them have reason to critically examine it and they are primarily being polite and social. If they uncritically accepted a “photo” of a toad posed like Jesus on the cross and all said “Amen, this shows God is great!” then I’d be a lot more worried for them.
Kermit Rides a Unicorn
The latest big thing for Facebook bots appears to be fake movie posters. I’m guessing the Back to the Future IV deepfake trailer prompted these; they’re the first such “posters” I’ve seen, anyway.
Examples:
I can’t share them because I’ve already blocked the culprits which posted them but I’ve had fake posters for Independence Day 3 in my feed today.
Good to know that in “Back to Future Thugaur 4”, time travel melts your fingers off.
I"m more concerned about the typography, to be honest.
At the size it is on my 1400x900 screen and the distance I sit from my monitor, I didn’t really see that level of detail. But it still looks uncanny. The faces are all exactly facing the camera in a way that never happens in real photos.

Over the past few months, I’ve been seeing an awful lot of this crap on my Facebook feed. Some days it seems like literally every other post will be some weird AI-generated image, with text reading “Why don’t pictures like this ever trend”, and #ScarlettJohansson and #BeautifulCabinCrew hashtags.
Hmmmm… click-seeking mega-corporations gonna seek clicks. Isn’t that all there is to this?
