Facebook: Games and Timeline

Just curious about why Facebook and games are so intertwined… do they make money from the companies who created the games? I’ve tried to eliminate all references to Games as best I can and for the life of me can’t stop it from telling me about some of my friend game activity. I went thru the Hide procedure and as soon as I refreshed it came right back.
Also what’s up with Timeline and how come I can’t read certain stories or look at certain videos without “upgrading” to Timeline?

Because Facebook own all your base.

Yes Facebook takes 30% of every in-game sale. You can buy stuff for Farmville, for example. Pay real money get a digital pig, stuff like that.

Not every game sells stuff so not every game is a money maker for Facebook but I’m sure they want to encourage game developers to create games and sell stuff, or at least give developers more exposure for their 30% ripoff, so Facebook is not so quick to let you hide all the games.

Although to be honest I haven’t had a problem hiding. Maybe if I hide something then refresh the page or something, but if I close the window and come back to Facebook, stuff stays hidden.

Thanks… I had no idea that people paid real money on those games some time.

How about Timeline… why are they pushing that or is there a reason why certain things can only work in Timeline?

Timeline is the new and future interface. New development is going to be on that platform, not the old one. Some applications are designed to take advantage of it. Since everyone will be on Timeline shortly it’s the logical choice for development.

Ads are also served while you are playing games. Part of Facebook’s model is to try and just keep you on their site as long as possible, both for the ad views and because the more time you spend there the more information you reveal about yourself. That information is worth money.
