Of course we’ve all been aware of this for some time but for those who were inclined to think it an exaggeration read and weep.
The whole world knows the heartreaking photo but all Facebook can see is child porn.
Zuckerberg or whichever of your minions is responsible for this, you are a fucking moron and a creepy one at that. If you really see no difference between this photo and porn then God help your putrid soul.
I really don’t understand how FaceBook became such a primary news and info feed when it’s basically an open-ended blog for people with nothing much to say. There’s really a lot of explanation for the current levels of public discourse when an unfiltered river of trival posts has a disproportionate effect on people who have nearly every news and information source on earth a few clicks away. I guess News Is Hard or something.
I find the WalMart display completely in line with what I’d expect from a system that will do any stupid thing to sell two more packs of Coke. That people can be shocked shocked I tell you shocked over this and blithely ignore far more manipulative practices every day is even more inexplicable. To me, at least.
Yeah! The company is run by idiots! And all the users are idiots! And everyone who works there is an idiot! And kids these days don’t know music! And they’re always on my lawn!
Actual story: Machine learning algorithm misidentifies a famous photo containing a naked little girl for kiddie porn, no doubt due to the in-photo presence of a naked little girl. Newspaper makes hay out of imagining that the CEO of Facebook personally makes these decisions.
Interestingly enough, this week’s NOVA episode tangentially touched on this. They were talking about using AI to thwart terrorism, but the algorithms were based on earlier ones for detecting… kiddie porn.
This forum has more intelligence in one Pit thread than FB has in any quarter of its daily data dump. The bar is too high for idiots; those that wander in just as quickly wander out, back to 140 character land.
I’ve posted more in any one recent thread here than in seven years of having an FB account.
FB has no hurdles, no intelligence bar, no filtering of users at all and is crafted to endlessly reward those who post every hamburger they eat. The Dope fights ignorance; FB runs on it.
Yep. Facebook is a social funhouse filter, where you place all the fun and impressive and interesting things in your life, and leave out the misery and desperation and sadness, so that the rest of the world thinks you’re an incredibly happy, successful, well-adjusted and intelligent person.
To the extent that i get any news from Facebook, it’s from friends posting links to proper, actual news stories, essays, opinion pieces, etc. Facebook’s own news feed gets treated like advertising, and ignored.
It’s also OK as a news aggregator, if you like/follow reputable news sites through Facebook. For example, I follow the New York Times, NPR and the Guardian among others, and their stories show up in my news feed regularly. Doesn’t mean I don’t also go to their regular websites all the time as well.
It would have been ironic if I’d actually first heard about this on my Facebook feed, but I read about it first on the Guardian’s site. But the New York Times article about the story is in my feed - as is, now, a link that I put to the original story where the Norwegian newspaper published the open letter to Marc Zuckerberg, including the offending picture.
I predict Facebook is going to cave on this pretty quickly.
This has to be the stupidest thing I’ve ever read … why in the Name of God would you think FB is a “quasi-public utility”? Dude, it’s private property, in exactly the same way SDMB is private property, exactly the same way as your next door neighbor’s front yard is private property. What kind of commie/hippy/socialist McGovernik are you anyway that think you can put pictures of naked 13-year-old girls anywhere you want to? Talk about thinking they’re entitled …
