I understand “American Idol” has an upper age limit as to who may enter. Isn’t that called age discrimination? Even as a contest, and not a place of employment, I thought a contest cannot exclude any group of individuals. - Jinx
No, a contest can certainly exclude people based on age.
What law, specifically, did you think was being violated?
Almost every contest I have ever seen has a lower age limit (“Must be 18 or over”). Why would an upper age limit be any less legal.
Read the fine print on most contest rules, and you’ll find all kinds of restrictions.[ul]

If contests couldn’t have age limitations, Miss Teen USA could get very interesting. It would be even more interesting if they were barred from discriminating on sex.
Well, I can’t answer the OP but I do know this is off point. Requiring an individual to be an adult to participate is never age discrimination, under any circumstance. Most employers “discriminate” against people under 16 legally, but doing so against people who are older would not be legal.
