Factual question about "Platoon" the movie.

Near the end of the movie when the NVA are running towards the army base, a NVA soldier places what looks like a short bamboo type spear (I think it had a couple of feathers on it) in the crutch of a tree.

What’s the significance of it?

MtM

It points the way soldiers following should go. At least that’s what I always assumed it was.

We used to do this when we were “occupying a site” to “begin operations.” I dunno if it has the same meaning, but we planted our Mojo Stick (this was way before Austin Powers). It consisted of a deer skull with a black bandanna bearing the Ranger’s insignia, the whole of which was mounted on a broken guidon staff. It was cool and our ops were almost always successful.

If course, we were cooks … just kidding.

So was Steven Segall.

i think it was a point to return to after the mission
